MASSACHUSETTS IN POLITICAL MESS A SAYS LAWRENCE : .-.71 , .- ... i V.;? .. By Darkly Lawrence i (Copyrliht, 1IJO, ey Tbs Journal) F , Boston,- Mass., Oct. 14,Throat trouble bee' been an unfortunate , handicap to mtnjr campaign speak- : era, but none teems to have devel- Oped a ease exactly Ilka that nf v. Senator David , Walsh of Maaaachu setts. Ha didn't become speechless, as is generally the case, by address ing open air meetings. No, ha grew Inarticulate when he read that Gov- ernor Cox of Ohio had embraced the ' t Leartie of Nations In the WUsonlan eense, after the memorable meeting at the White House. The senator engineered theWaseachu. aatts delegation at the Deihocratfe na - tlonal convention and helped nominate ? Cox. Shortly afterward' he went to ' . Dayton and after a long 'talk with the nominee expressed the View that the ; governor was all right on the league Issue. WALSH rCAAS IRISH TOTE But the trip to the White House and the subsequent speeches by Governor Cox 'made It difficult for Senator Walsh : to follow the new standard bearer of the " party without Jeopardising his position " In the Democracy of Massachusetts, whleh is nine tenths of Irish birth 6r de ' ' scent and believes that the league of ; Nations la a British product and that even If Article X were cut out. It would still be of benefit to Great Britain. In '. deed, the baste objection of the Irish to the league la that it associates the United. State with England and if the Irish had their way there would not be any deal ing with Britain, diplomatic or other wise, until the Irish republlo waa rec ognised. Ho Senator Walsh developed a case of : throat trouble and has not been heard from In the national campaign since his trip to Dayton. Ohio, and the Democratic party In Massachusetts has gone over j almost wholly to the Republican cam- palgn end will vote for Senator Harding for-president. 1 . f BIO)' MAJORITY PREDICTED Naturally, there would be a large Re publican majority In this state, anyway, . on account of Governor Coolldge's place In the national ticket, but the acquisition of the Irish vote will help swell the ma jority to aomethtng like 150,000. The Democrats of Massachusetts have a stale ticket, yet the recent state con . ventlon at Springfield, wherein the Democratic national platform on the .League of Nations waa Indorsed, had about 100 votes as contrasted with the ' !000 normally represented. Not a single x Irish Democrat of prominence, with the exception of Michael O'Leary, not even Senator Walsh himself, attended the convention. Mr. O'Leary had been nomi nated for governor In the primaries but withdraw In favor of Marcus Coolidge, .a Democrat, who was given a sort of Franklin Roosevelt nomination, so as to derive' some benefit from (he name of Coolidge. . . . MACHI3E FOB ADAMS , " ' ? The Democrats named as electors what the average worker in the party calls a "highbrow," men Ilk Charles W. Elliott and Charles FranolaAdama, but who ever waa la charge of the business of picking electors to go on the ticket slipped a cog by not. consulting Mr. Adams, who, pr the way. own the fa mous yacht Resolute and is a descendant of John Adams. He has announced that he will vote for Harding, but that if he Is elected he will abide by the desire of the other electors. There Is no chance of his being elected, but it illustrates the awkwardness of the Democratic position In this state this year. As a matter of fact, there are some Irish who will vote the party ticket they have always voted anJ will en election day submerge their "innermost Irish feeling.' It will not be a wholesale deser tion, i HARDING WAKES COMPARISON . The Republicans themselves are partly responsible for this, as Senator Hard ing has said publicly h didn't believe America should meddle in-the Irish question and be remarked, in Oklahoma the other day that he didn't believe the American people would permit the Brit ish 'government to tell us tor give the Philippines their Independence." Strange how timet do change, .Just a few rears a0 somebody got up in the house of representative in Washington and: de clared that tha Catholic church had fought the grant of independence and in the sasna speech accused the Irish : of 'being; Inconsistent In not supporting the movement for a - Philippine -republic. Whereupon ,- Representative GsJIlvari, Democrat, of Massachusetts. 7 delivered himself of an invective against the afore said somebody, declaring there was no comparison between tha people of the Philippines and the great Irish race. Yet Senator Harding did use a compari son of Irish and Philippine) independence and it hasn't hart vitally, piagnst with the Wilson administration and the al leged failure of the president to brine Irish freedom from,'' the British at the Paris conference is' the first and fore most thought of the Irish Democrats. They will punish Wilson first and attend to Brother Harding afterwards. AFTER MARCH FOURTH Probably the banners and decorations will-not have been taken down 24 hours after-March 4. next, when a delegation of Irish will be asking American Inter vention in the Irish controversy. Also, it cannot b a&id that tha Republicans have shown much hospitality to the new Irish element', coming their way this year. The) Republicans of British origin do not seem to fraternise at Republican gatherings with the Irish Democrats. The Irish are by no means a permanent loss to the Democrats of this state. They win be back to the party Just aa sooa as they Jiava expressed themselves on the league-Issue , and. matters Wneonian. - Australia to Place $20,000,000 Order San Francisco, Oct 14. (U. P.)
