tecture and decoration. These diagrams,
he explains, present to the eye features
that have a close analogy to what is
perceived by the ' ear and thus aid the
listener to graep the relation of part to
part in a musical composition, so that
eventually the composition is heard as
an organised whole, with a distinct

enrolled with the Boston Conservatory
of Music and are booked to come over

studied with Theodore Splerlng of New

Carl Prill, .first . concert, master of the
Royal Opera, Vienna, Austria, who was
also teacher of Maude Powell, the cele
brated American violinist. Originally
from Minnesota, where he taught in sev
eral well known colleges since coming

cause., much' of their success depends
upon the voice of the instrument Itself,
but It Is hot generally understood that
the bow that draws the tone must also
possess rare qualities. The fact of .the
matter Is that a good bow is as eeeen
tlal as a good . fiddle. And yet there
are hundreds of violin builders to one
bow maker. -
8. R. Kelley. a well known Portland
musician. Impressed with the scarcity
of" good violin -bows, several years ago
took tin the study of bow manufacturing.
and in a small way began to place his
product on the- market. . Today his bows
sre being spoken of as among the finest
obtainable, and . pleased customers ; are
spreading the rood word of the Fort
land product throughout the land. He
now has a modest. bow shop in the Cer-
unger building. . ..
. The bows are made of Pernambuco
wood, imported in the log from South
America, and treated at carefully as is
the wood that goes into- a high grade
violin- The sticks are cut into blanks
and then .worked by hand and tern
pered into shape. Here is where the
art of tha bow maker enters... for. .Its
tone-producing qualities depend upon
weight, curvature and springiness.

In, many Instances fabulous prices, were
Francois Tourte and Villiaume, the lat
ter of whom also acquired .some fame
as builder of violins. There are - two
or, three of these bows Of French man
ufacture in Portland, but their weight
in gold would not gain possession of

of Oregon student in dramatics, opened
the winter season this year In Salt Lake
city playing in Thomas'. "Witching
Hour." Miss Young, whose home is in
Portland, has just completed a national
tour with the Klllson -White Chautauqua
company In "Kindling." She was one
of three starred on Broadway last win
ter by Maurice Brown, when she ap
peared in "The Medea."

It is a rare treat to listen to the ex
cellent organ work of Miss Ethel Lynn
Ross at the First Congregational church.
Who not very long ago came to Portland
from the First Presbyterian church of
Springfield, 111, one of the largest
churches in that state. Miss Ross has
to her credit a considerable list of prom
lnent positions in the East, and has been
in - great - demand as a recitallst. That
her reputation is well earned is gladly
conceded by those who have listened to
her Interpretive skill, as well as her ex
cellent technique.' Miss Roes seems to
have the ability td rightly estimate the
resources of her organ, which, seems,
outside of the matter of technique, to be
the criterion of successful organ playing:

soprano, has been reengaged for the
ensuing year as soloist at Atkinson. Me
morial church on East Twenty-ninth and
Everett. Miss Richmond Is in training
for an operatic career at the Valalr Con

where she studies voice, dramatic art.
French and Italian. On Tuesday evening,

splendid success for the social gathering
