Forest Grove will bfe the "Jeru
salem'' to which the Congregational
tribes in Oregon will wend their way
next week. The occasion is the
meeting of the state Congregational
conference on October 12, 13 and
14. The women's board of missions
for the Pacific district, holds the
first ynectlng Tuesday morning, with
addresses by Mrs. W. W. Blair, Iiss
Martha Grimsby, Mrs. J. L. Bowlby,
Mrs. W. K. Royal and Mrs. O. P.
Avery! Miss Miriam L. Woodberry
from New York city, will speak at
11 O'fclock on "The Challenge of
1920."
Tuesday afternoon the Pacific univer
sity quartet will ninir and a grroup of
womeit will give brief addresses. At the
evening session the annual conference
sermon will be preached by the Rev. O.
P. Avery of Portland and the communion
service will be held with the Rev. Ed
ward Constant and the .Rev. C. H. John
ston, both of Portland, officiating.

and the Tercentenary Celebration." Dr.

anniversary with a banquet and a series
of addresses by Dr. Bishop of Forest

land and Dr. McElveen of the First

day morning and the Rev. Frank M.

cussed by the Rev. K. C. Hickman of
Wilbur Methodist church In the Ifult
nomah hotel auditorium on Sunday eve
nings during October. The discussions
will be based on replies received from
100 prominent professional, business and
laboring men of Portland in response
to a questionaire covering several ques
tions: Why are not more men actively
engaged in church work? Are the
churches of your acquaintance Justifying
their existence? What is your strongest
criticism of the church?
The special topics announced are : Oc
tober 10. "The Hypocrites In the
Church" ; October 17, "Too Much Creed
and Restraint"; October 24. "The
Church, a Hundred Years Behind the
Times"; October 31, "The Preacher
Pack Horse or Prophet?"
Dr. Hickman will quote freely from
the letters received and will discuss the
quesUon in the light of the thinking of
the average business man. A new musi
cal feature will be introduced Sunday
evening when Professor William Mansell
Wilder will present his newly organized
male chorus of 24 voices.
Miss Marguerite Hewson has arrived
from Chicago and has begun her work
as special deaconess 'in Juvenile and hos
pital service. Miss Hewson will work
with Jucfjre Jacob Kanzler in rendering
special assistance to boys and girls who
have come under the supervision of the
juvenile court.

Sunday morning the Rev. W. O. Eliot
will preach on the Lord's Prayer at the
Church of , Our Father. During the eve
jilng service he will read from Dante's
Inferno, while discussing the "Terrors of

the Unitarian Laymen's league will meet
Monday at 8 P. m. at the residence of

Church workers of Portland are asked

pack the clothing gathered Wednesday.
Everything received has been fumigated
and is ready to pack. Work will com
mence at 1 p. m. and last all afternoon,

Will Celebrate
Coming Holidays
Following the city wide meeting of
community service, held September 27,
officers of the organisation are prepar
ing to help arrange neighborhood Hal
loween parties and, later, the celebration
of Armistice day.
The service has sent to all Parent
Teacher associations and community or
ganizations affiliated with the branch
libraries or parks circular suggestions
for programs to be used at each of these
events. With the suggestion is a series
of questions to determine the value of
the organization to the community and
to expand its usefulness wherever possi
ble. Walter Jenkins, executive secre
tary, whose offices are In the Northwest
ern Bank building, has requested that
neighborhood clubs of every sort make
full use of the community service move
ment, its suggestions and facilities.

One of the endeavors of the Portland
federation of churches during October
Is a houseto-houi survey of the city.
The purpose of this survey Is to secure
to the churches the cooperation of the
unchurched persona resident here. In
formation In the office of the federation
indicates that more than 100,000 Portland
people do not now have any relation to
any church Protestant, Catholic or
Jewish. This survey carries with It no
Idea of proselyting, but simply aims to
present to all people the Importance of
the church In modern society.
Pastors and laymen throughout the
city have organised survey teams who
are canvassing their districts. The co
operation of the public Is earnestly de
sired.
The survey is being directed by the
svnrey department of the federation
which consists of the superintendents
and leading pastors of 14 denominations.

haa grown In popularity. Last year
nearly 200 religious workers, representing-
39 churches and nine denomina- ,
tlona, took advantage of the courses of
fered. The faculty this year is composed of
experts from the various fields of re-'
llgious activity. A charge of $1 a sem
ester will be made for each student en
rolled. Several churches have selected
young people who desire training and
paid their registration tn order that the
church might be assured future leader

The opening meeting last Sunday of
the Warren Bible class and vesper class
at the First Preabyterlan church waa
