TOG LOSES LAUNCH
IN BIG GALE; SAVES
THE FISHERMEN
Astoria, Oct. I. -y- Having en
countered a terrific southeast gale
which threatened to damage the
craft materially, the tug Daniel
Kern arrived in Astoria from Seat
tle Thursday morning. The tug waa
towing the Puget Bound Towboat
company's barge 8- which had
the gasoline towboat .Goldfish on
board.
About noon Wednesday the tug en
countered the storm i and the pounding
of the waves opened, the seams of the
barge. which was swamped, and the
launch Goldfish, valued at $9000, was
watthed overboard, and sank. While off
North Head Wednesday afternoon the
Kern sighted the trolling boat' Dearie,
swamped and on her beam ends. Her
owners, Ltnstrom Brothers, were still
clinging to the .craft. The two men were
picked up, nearly worn out with their
experience in battling the waves. Ac
cording to the LI nd strom brothers, their
craft had been struck with a big breaker
as they were crossing the channel, which
smashed in the cabin windows and the
boat soon lilted.
The next breaker turned the craft bot
tom up, and both men' were thrown out,
one of them being fully haf an hour In
Betting back to the boat. - The little
launch was equlDDed with air tanks,
which caused her to right herself parti
ally and she drifted across the north spit
nnd several miles out to sea, where she
was found by the Kern about two hours
tafter the accident occurred.
Wednesday evening, off the mouth
of the river, the Kerji sighted the troll
ing craft H-S33 A, flying signals of dis
tress. This craft, which carried John
O'Neill, had been swamped by the
heavy seas and was helpless. O'NelJl
was taken ; on board the tug, while a
line was placed on board this craft and
it was towed into.port. The waterlogged
barge was beached Thursday so it can be
pumped out and repairs made.
