Sheep None By Broavlan Wall New York, Oct, 1. Strength tn the railroad shares, with further weakness in the industrial depart ment, characterised dealings In the stock market Thursday. The per sistent selling of industrials In many Instances resulted in new low levels for thia movement, and In some cases tha lowest prices in histoiy. Brokers reported that it is now fashionable to sell the Industrials and buy the rails. Closing cfuotatlons for the Industrials was around the lowest of the session, while the final figures for the stocks of transportation companies were near the best. The Industrial issues have reached the point where many bankers and brokers beUieve that they have about discounted the worst that can Happen. They point out that the corporations will have to take heavy losses on account of depre ciated inventories but add that their profits have been so great since the be ginning of the European war that losses can be taken out of the surplus earn ings of previous years without result ing. In reoourse to the bankruptcy courts. -To those taking an optimistic view of the situation the worst is about over. Some of the tire manufacturers have decided to take the bull by the horns and out prices. A substantial reduction, probably 15 per cent, is epexcted to be announced tomorrow by one of the smaller companies whose shares are traded in on the New York Stock Ex change. The curtailment of production by the tire concerns may be realised from the fact that within the last month $5,000 passenger tickets have been sold at Akron to people who left the city be cause of unemployment Reserve Bank Head Calkins Is Visitor John U.
