The Accident List Skids Upward A tour-some lummcr having riven way to golden fait, and the uncer tain" tnooda of Indian summer being about to resolre themselves into a day or two of rain now and then, it behooves the idle motorist to speculate upon the effect wet pavements are a-olne; to have, and have already had, upon the city's automobile accident list. There Is always a number of people willin to regard the automobile as a danger, and IX the average motorlat neglecta meana of safety on wet pavements It is but adding- fuel to the flames and increastns; the degree of unpleasantness all around. Two things contribute to danger in Wet weather. One of them Is speed, and there is none greater than this; the other is carelessness. Speeding at any time, either on more or less crowded streets or on lonesome roads, is never pardonable when the pavements 'are wet. The danger of an ap preaching vehicle, either from straight ahead or from an angle, is ever present, and not only does the motorist have to take into consideration the position and pace of his own vehicle, but must always keep an eye peeled for the foolishness of the other fellow. A driver of experience said that driving, good driving, does not entail the operation of one's own car, but calls for driving the other fellow's car as well as his own. One cannot perform either difficult operation when going at an excessive rate of speed or when not on the Job behind his own steering wheel. Carelessness Is self-explanatory. Failing to watch for other cars at In tersections, cutting corners and disregarding arm signals are items of carelessness which at times cause good drivers to lose patience with the rest of the fraternity. When a man drives his own machine forth and is anxious to take care of it, he does not relish a strange party coming skid ding into him to rake fender and spoil Immaculate enamel. A fender at a rakish angle will spoil the appearance of the neatest looking motor car. list's regard the rain as something besides a boon for crops and con sider it as a danger to the man with slick tires or erratically locking rear wheels. Also, it is well to be in a hurry some day when the sun is shining and the pavement Is dry. v More Sign Criticism Another Oregonlan carries back from the gjtouth with wonderful tales of California's road signing system. This Portland man also calls atten tion to the fact that, as soon as he had Crossed the line, all aid to naviga tion ceased. In the daytime he drove by asking people the way, and at night he probably directed his course by the stars. How long la this to be? The state highway commission answers part of the question by saying that their drive for better signs will come to a sue cessful conclusion in the spring and that by next summer every state road will be numbered, distances will be noted and people will know where they are, night or day. ' But what of the county roads? Simon Benson calls attention to the fact that it is the duty of the county courts to erect signs on county roads and give what aid they can to guide the stranger in their land. But it hasn't been done, and to all intents and purposes it never will be done until the state takes steps to make this law effective, until the state sharpens its teeth and wakes the counties up to the fact that state roads are being signed and people travel- . tog county roads are very much at tea. Why should it be necessary for a great hue and cry to be raised over road stgns? Why is it necessary for motorists to wander all over the map when on a road or somewhere or other? Are the counties not experienc ing that spirit of local pride thatwould cause them to make their strip of territory as attractive as the next fellow's strip, or are they waiting for someone else to get busy and do their own work for them? Is.lt going to cost so much money to put a few signs here and there at crossroads that county officials are regarding- the idea with dismay, or are these offi cials merely aaleefn on the Job? If it Is the former, let it be a neighborhood task. If a somnolent dis regard to duty is the cause, someone must wake them up. What is the good of having a fine road If the man who drives it doesn't know where it leads him? Or are the people, the courts or the county so desirous of having the stranger within their gates remain within them that they neglect to show him how to get out? How long must we drive thus blindly? SAS SHORTAGE BRINGS LESSON IN REFINING METHODS Auto Owners Use, Less Gasoline Since They Have Not Been Able to Get All Demanded. Alleged shortage of gasoline in United States during the last four months are claimed by refiners to have taught them a needed lesson in refining methods. Whereas In 1914 only 13.8 per cent of crude went into gasoline, now a minimum of 25 per cent is obtained, a per centage reached as far back as 1819. This increase In gasoline yield is not a sudden one. lowever, out is tne culmi nation Of years of experimentation to meet the demand for automobile fuel. The Burton system of refining, owned by the Standard Oil Company of Indiana is said to be one of the most progressive steps along renning lines maae in re cent years. This system is not applied to California crudes, California oil and refining companies baring tnalr own systems. Oil companies also, claim the shortage to have caused a more economical usage of the fuel by automobile operators. The total gasoline consumed does not show decrease, but consumption per car hi met with a sharp decline. In 1915 the estimated use per ear was 17.4 barrels, while present consumption is said to be 11.4 barrels. OOO 1918 2,00.000 1914 S.871.000 Gasoline production In 1919 was nearly three times as great as in 1914, being 94.234.000 barrels, compared with 14.762, 000 barrels, a gain of 170 per cent. Dur ing the same period crude oil production Increased only 42 per cent, from 25,700, 000 barrels to 377.000,000 barrels. Auto mobiles registered at the end of 191 numbered 7,600,000, as against 1,711.000 In 1914, a gain of 830 per cent Gasoline exports more than doubled between 1914 and 191S, the most Important war year, but declined to4.185.000 barrels last year, due to the fact that European countries still retained large stocks from the pre vious year. On.) the roads In this locality should take a drive over the hills to Hornbrook. The road, aside from the speed with which It is being completed, is a splendid piece of engineering. A aids trip to Crater lake found the roads to be good, the second half of the Journey being over better roads than the first half. By next summer this whole road should be completed and will be a wonderful highway. From Medford to Grants Pass and Eugene is good high' way for the most part, that between Grants Pass and Eugene being especial' ly worthy of mention. When the road Is completed and the hills and canyons along the stretch are eliminated the road will be second to none anywhere. LACK OF SIGHTS C&1TICIZED One of the gravest criticisms made by Dr. Henton against Oregon roads was the lack of signs. At night, the signs are not to be found, either so placed as to have the light fall to reach them, or buried la a multitude of adver tlsing material. A great contrast to the signs of California, which are easily dis tinguished either by day or by night.
