Cokes Some of the retailers who want to make greater profits ton coast caught salmon are" unwilling to allow the public to purchase the cheaper priced . fall caught Columbia river stock. The latter Is now betna; sold at 10 cents a pound in the retail shops. One retailer In a public market on Yamhill street has become so worried and burdened by the public asking for the cheaper priced stock that he has dis played a wg-n In front of hla place of for the 10-cent stock. Some of them ararue that the fall sal mon Is unfit for food. The fact that a very large per cent of the. canned sal mon that Is sold on the market is out of thla class of fiah seems to have been for gotten. The redder portion of this fall caught stock would be classed as a me dium red in the canned goods trade, the next shade would be called pinks and the lowest grade would hat chums. Thla fish can be canned just as wen by the housewife as by others at low prices but some of the selfish dealers don't want the public to secure this stock. The season for razor clams will open In Oregon next week, and if the tides are rlcht consumers will soon be able to se cure supplies fh the retail shops. Business on Pacific Coast Shows Decline, According to Report The August report of the credit clear ing house is based on about 200,000 ac tual transactions by wholesalers and manufacturers artreraUne in volume over i 150,000,000. Purchases in the Pacific coast section shows a declined activity from the previous month of the last four years. responding month of the last four years Indebtedness, while a little less than the previous month, shows greater than August. 1919. and August, 1918. but Is a little less than August of the two previ ou8 years. Payment activities are nearly equal to July, but are komewhat less than August of last year. Comparing this month with August. 1918, 1917 and 1918 we find the activity somewhat better. General conditions on the coast are reported very favorable, but lack of transportation has hindered the moving of crops to some extent and the recent check reported In the lumber business has retarded the early fall trade. Buyers are optimistic as a whole, but are buyirfk very carefully, hoping that prices will decline as the selling season grows nearer. In the caaa of the United Stales National bank this represents a gain of S per cent over the report of June SO. or 30 per cent over the same period one year ago. The liank of Commerce gained over 3 per cent aver' the report of one year ago. The First National bank made an in crease of 8234,819.30 since June 30 and a gain of $562,391.36 in the past year. This record for the t'ull season of the yecr is attributed to the returns from lumber shipments, livestock and agricul tural products, and to new wealth brought In by investors. Had it not been for the car shortage, which was particu larly severe in this section, the record would probably nave been '20 per cent. larger.
