An attempted violation of the
American consulate at Genoa, Italy,
by workmen bearing red flags was
reported to the state department to
day by the American embassy at
Rome.
Workmen besrlns red flags were
paln the consulate In a funeral pro
cession of victims of recent outbreaks
' In Oenoa. They rushed Into the con
sulate and demanded that the American
flag be lowered st half roast. Vies Con
sul Murphy refused and ordered the men
from the consulate, and the flag brought
Into the bulldlns;. After Indulging- In
demonstrations and Insulting- language,
the workmen departed. No Italian sol
diers or police were on duty.
Italian authorities immediately ex
pressed their regrets.
Deschanel Letter of
Resignation Is Now
In Hands of Cabinet

lerand today submitted President Paul
Deschanel's resignation to the cabinet.
. The French cabinet today announced
the national assembly will be called to
Versailles palace next Tuesday to elect
Deschanel's successor. The call for a
pedal session was to go out today.
