. Leads Hot Chase
Salem, Sept. 17. William Balrd, an
Inmate of the Mate school for feeble
minded here, led the local police depart
ment and resident" of the Tew park dl
trlct a merry chase Thursday night be
fore he wan finally captured and re
turned to the Institution, from which he
had escaped earlier In the day.
Balrd was discovered attempting to
break Into the Mahoney store in the
Yew park district in southeast Salem.
When Chief of Tolfce Welch and a vol
unteer poiHe of Yew park residents ar
rived Balrd literally took to the tall tim
ber, with th pursuers well in the rear.
Balrd was about to make good hla es
cape when two shots from the chief's
revolver brought him to a halt. Balrd
Is an old offender, leaving the state
school at every opportunity.

flel, 84, died at the home of his son, Wi

Albany, Or., Sept. 17. James Ward,
Crabtrse farmer, under $8600 bond to
appear for trial on a charge of assault
with a dangerous weapon upon City
Marshal M. Story and Mayor H. J.
Schenk of Bweet Home, was fined $100
for illegally possessing and giving away
Intoxicating liquor, to which he pleaded
guilty.
Ward, indicted by the grand Jury two
days later, became Involved in an al
tercatlon at Sweet Home that resulted in
the present serious condition of Marshal
Story, 78 years old, who is reported near
death, due to a stroke of paralysis fol
lowing a blow from a rock reported to
have been thrown by either Ward or
RobertsBruce, his companion, also under
8600 bond.

A lone highwayman held up two em
ploye in the Standard Oil filling sta
tion at East Tenth street and Haw
thorne avenue Thursday night and rob
bed th till of close to 11000 and a
package of canceled gasoline tickets.
W. J. Schmoral and F. Ck Anderson,
the men on duty at the station, were
forced against the wall by the robber
while he took the money.
The description furnished Inspectors
Anderson and Hall was of a man 28
years old. 5 feet S Inches tall, weight
160 pounds. He is said to have worn a
gray suit and a dark brown cap.
