Storey. 78 year old. marshal at Sweet Home, whom ihey attacked and Injured In a bat- le Monday night while restating Arrest, aocordlng to Dr. II. J. Schenk, mayor of the town, who himself suf fered five broken ribs. The melee "arose when Ward attempted to 'evade arrest on a charge of drunk enness after he had been reported to have created a disturbance at the "Sweet Home hotel. Bruce, Ward and Frank Miller had driven to Sweet Homa and entered the hotel to eat supper. Though they were Wald to have been drinking, they were not ejected. The city marshal was called and, while he was attempting- to take Ward into custody, Bruce inter fered. 7Iayor Schenk came to Storey's aid. The fight Was confined to fists for a time and then Ward and Bruce began throwing stones, two of which struck Marshal Storey, fracturing three ribs and paralysing his .left side. Stones , also broke five .of Mayor Schenk's ribs. While the battle was in progress Mil ler attempted to start their car, but had trouble, so Bruce and Ward fled. Mayor Schenk deputised a croup of bystanders. fThe hastily 'organized posse failed to overtake the fugitives, who separated and hid in the underbrush, protected by approaching darkness. Miller, who said he was going home, was followed and at 4 o'clock Monday morning- the sheriff stopped an automobile containing four men. The sheriff stopped and arrested Bruce and Ward, releasing Miller and George Spears, the other occupants. The condition of Marshal Storey was reported to be critical and growing worse. Members of his family did not expect him to live. Upon the outcome of his fight' for life depends the charge upon which his assailants will be held. Bruce has a wife. igh.Wind Drives , Big Fire Raging in Logged-Off Land Curene. SenL I. A telenhone mes !sage from 'the Franklin Lumber com pany at Franklin, 18 miles west of Eu ene, brought word that a big forest fire ti raging in the logged off lands ad jacent to the mill. As the plant has been idle for some time, lew men are on hand to combat the flames, which were being driven by a high wind. Struck by a rebounding log. which was being lifted by a donkey engine in the camp of the Booth-Kelly Lumber corrfpany' near Wendllng., Monday, Wll lam C Lewis, an employe, was fatally Injured. His skull was crushed In and his Jaw broken. He leaves his wife. A Mister. Mrs. Klmer Kensler, resides In Portland. He was an ex-service man. I The sheriffs office has received w6rd of the arrest at Oakland, Cal.. of M. J. Lay cock, charged with the passing of bogus checks here. Funeral services for Kenneth A. McPherson were held Sunday under the auspices of Taylor Masons lodge of which he was a charter member. l3r. J. C. Ghormley of this city delivered the funeral address. Mr. McPherson came to this section in 1882, settling on the homestead which is now a part of the incorporated city of Wasco. Ker 10 years he was county clerk of Sherman county. He was past master . of the Masons lodges -of Wasco and Grass Valley, worshipful master of Ku reka lodge of Moro and a member of the Knights Templar at The Dalles and of Al Kader, Mystic Shrine, Portland. He was ,44 years old. -i Oregon Hop Picking To Be Film Feature i Salem. Sept. 8. Hop picking In the Willamette valley will be featured by the Pathe Film company In Its news reel in the near future. William K. Hudson of Seattle Is filming hop pick ing operations in the yards about Salem this week and the pictures, it Is said, win be used on the entire Pathe circuit.
