LABOR DAY EVENTS
IN ITS HISTORY
Labor day was probabl ymore gen
erally observed In Portland Monday

ward securing a permanent home
for the union organizations.

I Marshfield. Kept. 7. Coos Bay citizens
suspended all business Monday for two
big celebrations, the dedication of the
new Elks temple and Ihe observation
of Labor day by the unions of the bay.
There was a large attendance of out-of-town
people.
Tbe Elks celebration Included a dance
Monday night and In the afternoon visit
ors were ken for auto drives. A big
lunch was served during the noon hour.

on the night train.
The labor unions held a big parade
Monday morning and Monday afternoon
the festivities were tranjiferred to Simp
son park at North Bend. The main speech
of ll.e day was made by O. O. Young,
representing the American Federation of
Labor. The Itev. J. Claud Black of the
Kplacopal chvrch made an address.
Dancing at the psrk pavilion continued
during the afternoon and night.

WINS IS BIG ARTISAN DRILLS
Salem, Sept. 7. Liberty assembly.
Lnlted Artisans, of Portland, was award
ed first prize in the competitive drill
between degree team3. the feature of
Monday's program of the trl-state con
vention, which was staged In the
Armory Monday morning. Kranr and
Alberta assemblies, also of Portland,
tied for second place, with 90 2-J points
to the credit of each. A special prise
ai awarded to the Heedsport drill
ti'am for traveling the longest distance In
reaching the convention. The United
Artlaans choae Astoria as the next
convention city.
Ivan Martin. Marlon county legislator,
welcomed the Artisans to Salem lu open
ing the session of the convention, 11. 3.

The dedicatory speeches were made by
Porter J, Neff. orator of the day. Pres
ident H. L. Wheeler of the Chamber of
Commerce, Commander Codding of the
local American Legion post. Mayor C E.
Gates and - Captain Lowell H. Smith,
commander of the air forest patrol in
Oregon. Gus Newbury read "In Flan
ders Field." Patriotic band selections
weie interspersed.
Then followed an air cruise of six big
army DeHavilands driven by Lieuten
ants Goldsborough, Coney and Kiel, Ca
dets Fowler and Guile, and Captain
Smith, all of the air service forest pa
trol of Oregon, the most thrilling ffea
ture of which was a parachute drop
from a plane by Lieutenant Coney, the
dare devil of the Oregon patrol, from
height of about 6000 feet.
