MONDAY, ' SEPTEMBER 8, 1920. THE OREGON DAILY 'JOURNAL, PORTLAND. OREGON 8 LEAGUE ISSUE IS i MAIN THEME OF : . : PARTY ORATORS r By Robert 1. Bender ! iVmttd JUwi BU(f CotTMponitoiit) T Nw York, Sept 6. The League of Nations In particular a'hd tha Wilson administration in general ontinue In the foremost position issues of the presidential cam paign. This la the outstanding development of the last 10 days, during which both par ties have tried out only to find the peo ple generally and many of their respec tive counselors apathetic The Democratic drive with the league Is for the -women and labor, and their secondary offensive is directed at' the progressive vote with Oovernor Cox's record and his appeal for "liberalism" as galnsu'Yadtcallsm and "conservatism' as his munitions. WET TALK EJfDED The Republican offensive, backed by charges of extravagance and waste un der Democratic rule, seeks to capture the business men and women. Chairman .Will Hays frankly Indicates that Re publicans expect to win largely on the basis of alleged nationwide discontent with the present administration methods. Recent polls taken both by Republican and Democratic party representatives show that among representative women the league la favored by th,e ratio of sJ most three to one. There Is little inter est among women folks In anything else wiui mm exception 01 mo nwn living. They manifest no Interest what ever in the -tariff, and. particularly in the Bast, have taken a surprisingly dis interested attitude toward the wet an dry issue. A vast majority of men polled during recent weeks by representatives of the two parties have disclosed the opinlofi that to business men, at least, the Issue of this election Is the Wilson administra tion rather than the league. TARIFF ALSO DEAD ISSUE The last 10 days have shown that neither Governor Cox's efforts to make the alleged Republican slush fund nor Will Hays' attempt to make alleged "wet" support of Cox an Issue, have been successful. This has been largely due to the fact that many of the lead ing newspapers of the country support Iris Cox have not rooponded enthusl fffflcally to the Injection of money charges Into the campaign, ajad many of the leading newspapers supporting Hard ing have discouraged Injection of the wet and dry Issue as a battleground. Because there has been no sharp pro hibition Issue developed, because there Is an almost unprecedented lack of In terest In the tariff, to date, by neither candidate, has laid down Insufficiently speciflo details of - a program against profiteers of the high cost of living, the league, as a Democratic issue, and the administration, as the Republican Issue, have weathered all attempts thus far to displace them by other controversial uestions. WOME5 FOIl IEAOUE The Democrats in placing their great hope on Governor Cox's stand for the league, point to the women's meetings that are being held, particularly in the far West and in the East, supporting the league. Reports on these meetings state that they un attended by women ef all political faiths, and that they are supporting the "league candidate" -not because he is of one party or the other, nor on the basis of relative strength of personality or anything else, but simply because he is for the league. These or ganizations, It Is reported, are being enthusiastically by women who saw war service In Europe. And, the Democrats claim, they reveal that the women's vote will be independent this year. Buy Your Pipeless Furnace Now Take a Whole Year to Pay- ; More Heat Less Fuel Heat Engineering Coal gases; when released by the heat, must be well mixed with heated air, directly above the lames, . in order to ignite and produce heat. The gas, un mixed with air and not ignited by the flames, escapes up the chimney or ac cumulates inside the furnace in the form of soot heat wasted. And there are about 10,000 cubic feet of gas to the ton of soft coal. The rl PIPELESS FURNACE because of the air-blast firepot, sets more heat from your fuel. The rising cases are thor oughly mixed with heated air. The big, cor rugated combustion chamber causes these valuable, heat-producing gases to swirl back to the flames, catch fire and produce more hecL .
