IIUCAT CARRIER IS IIILHI FIRST TO SAIL OF SEPTEMBER FLEET First of the 'September grain vei els to get away was the steamship "Westboro, dispatched by the Portland Flouring Mills company for Belfast direct. She left down at 7 o'clock Friday morning and carried 261,848 bushels of wheat, valued Vt $627,000. The Westboro will be followed by the British steamships Pilar Je Larrlnaga . and the Nlclto de Larrinaga in the or der named. The former will be loaded by the Pacific Oram company and the latter by Kerr, Glfford. Europe is the destination of both. Sunday -end Labor day Intervening, the two Englishmen will not get away until the middle of next week. The Pilar la working cargo at .the Portland Flouring . tnffls and the Nlclto is at Columbia dock being lined. - Inbound next week will be the Aber eoe from the Orient and the Steel Trader from London and Irish ports. Both have Inbound cargo, the Steel Trader bring ing to Portland 1400 tons of steel, the major portion of - which Is for ship building. DIRECT MAIL SERVICE TO AUSTRALIA AIDS EXPORTS Oreron exporters to Australia and New Zealand who have long been handi capped, along with all other Pacific port shippers, because of the slowness and inadequacy of mail service, have been notified that subsequent to January 1. the custom house officials of these Islands will not admit merchandise clear without presentation of all necessary documents.. Captain Payne accepted from the ship ping board at San Francisco the new steamship Hollywood built at the yard of ths Southwestern Shipbuilding cor poration at San Pedro. The craft is specially constructed for a training ship and Is now en route to Seattle to load for Honolulu and take about 150 re cruits. The automobile which disappeared slmul taneously with the disappearance of Charles W. Hays, chauffeur for the Anglo A London-Paris NaUonal bank, and $ 19,000 of the ' bank's ' funds, was found at midnight last night standing at the curb near Seventh and Steven son streets. In the machine were seven sacks of silver, containing- about S4000. Evi dently it had been standing there ail day. Police now believe Hays will be found somewhere near the city and are work ing on the theory that he drove away with the money and then changed au tomobiles as soon as he was outside the congested buiness district Mail Rates Fixed Upon Space Basis t . Carriers had asked that the rates be fixed on a weight basis. The- amount paid out for trans portation of malls by electric railroads last year was approximately $550,000. .
