Ted Gilbert Makes Spectacular
Climb Up Mountain Side,
Astride Harley-Davidson.
Larch mountain trail has faljen
before the onslaughts of the-gaso-llna
engine, and at last a motor
cycle has been able to reach i the
4045-foot altitude and establish' a
record said to be as high a mark as
It la mechanically possible for a ma
chine to go. Further than that, de
clares Ted Gilbert, the fun Is non
existent as well as the traction. '
Early Thursday morning of last week
a party of riders from the local Hxrley
Davidsoa agency took a - sidecar and
sport model machine, the former ridden
by U Schad and the latter by Ted Gil
bert, and ran to the foot of the moun
tain. They turned 'aside to the little
lumber camp town of Palmer and there
essayed the ups and downs through the
foothills to the base of the real grade.
Gilbert went on ahead while those In the
rear wrestled with the sidecar, which
was laden with provisions. The lunch
suffered severlv when Schad climbed a
boulder and the sidecar and the rest of
the outfit was deposited upon his chest.
Members of the party implored him to
hold the pose while an action photo was
taken, but Schad mutinied and the side
car was abandoned.
The party continued on foot, in the
wake of Gilbert's sport model, which
made the trip without chains or tractor
band. Rocks and logs obstructed the
trail and riding a motorcycle closely re
sembled bestriding a bucking equine. The
oartv in the rear failed- to catch up
with Gilbert, who made his climb in two.
hours and 20 minutes, the high mark
monument consisting of a board x4 feet
nailed to the biggest tree In the neigh
borhood, bearing the name of the rider
and the machine making the climb.

Freight Loads to
Be Hauled by New
, Seagull Airplane
The Creator was right, after all. is
the conclusion of the Blackburn Air
plane company, which has Just produced
a flying machine which has wings
ehaped like those of a seagull.
This new type combines high lifting
power with low " resistance against the
air. With these new wings a loading
of 13 pounds per square foot can be
obtained. Aerial experts say this will
make freight cargoes by air a success.
The "Pelican four-ton aerial lorry"
has been built by the Blackburn firm
to demonstrate the new Idea. The ma
chine, a monoplane, has a wlngspan of
148 feet, is fitted with two 450 horse
power Napier engines, and the propel
lers are fitted on to shafts behind the
pjjino- With one engine running the
machine can fly and climb at a speed
of 1 .miles an hour. The airplane will
carry four tons of freight, at a cost, of
2 shillings 140 cents) a mile.
By means of shutters near the leading
edge of the plane the airplane can be
turned and maneuvered with great ease,
independently of the rudder. This sur
mounts the difficulty of the Wright
patents.

"Never Again," Says
Hubby of 20 Years
A middle-aged man entered the office
of the probata judge and asked:
"Can one get an automobile license
here?" '
"No, sir. you can get them across the
hall," replied the judge. "But there is
one kind of license here w can issue."
"Look here, judge," replied the man as
he turned with a frown to leave. "I got
stuck for one of those things 20 years
ago, but I ain't going to be. caught
again." .t ' ': .
Coast Industry payrolls are slated
to receive a boost in the near future,
according to' I. A. Hannan. manager
of the local branch of the Scripps
Booth company of California, who
has Just received word from Harry
T. . Mc Knight, general manager of
the Scrlpps-Booth company of Cali
fornia, at Oakland, that ; R. C. Du
rante president, has completed ar
rangements for the erection and or
ganization of an assembly plant at
Oakland. Cal., In the course of the
next few weeks. - -r
EAST OPEJTS EYES '
This plan. In the opinion of local men,
is an admission on the part of eastern
men that the west needs industries of
its own and are ready to accede -to the
demand that coast automobile users
have factory centers nearer to the ter
ritory. In addition to this phase, Han
nan believes the organization will mean
much to the Coast, allowing as it will
greater prestige for this field In filling
orders, both for domestic use and for
the Oriental trade. With the initial
assembly operations of . the plant,
Scripps-Booth affairs on the Coast will
be given a distinct boost, and the branch
here, which has grown rapidly for the
past few months, rising from an organ
ization of six employes to 22, will b
given added, impetus, it is said.
Hannan. who has returned during the
last few days from a trip to Seattle for
an investigation into . trade conditions
there, says that the move by the Oak
land headquarters la a good one, in
view of what be considers greatly Im
proved conditions in the Sound country.
XBASE IS BRISK M
Not only is the Portland territory
showing an added briskness, but Wash'
ington as 'well, which has lagged behind
Oregon in recent weeks, seems to be
tightening its grip and belt and getting
down to the business of selling auto
mobiles and trucks. ; The? demand for
his own line there shows brightening
prospects in a remarkable degree,
Hannan is quite optimistic :: as to the
outlook.

B UILT TO EXCEL
Much wisdom has the Great Spirit granted the
Chiefs of my people. For many years have they
been builders of tires. Deeply rooted in their
hearts is the ambition to make a tire so famed in
all the land that the ylory of . it will be refected
even on their children's' chOdren. And so, O
Motorists, our TT Type tire is produced. Into it
we have put only the finest materials the world
affords; methods that express our high ideals; and
workmanship that only masters in their craft can
give. Our search for improvement never ends;
but meanwhile it represents our best; the tire we
have built to excel all others. "
.For many moons, O Travelers of the Highways,
have we made a study of your needs. And our
"D" Type tire, with its extra-large over-size, ad
ditional ply of fabric, and generously proportioned
extra rubber, together with "Savage" construction,
has been made to meet them. A great multitude
of you are now saying it is "the best fabric tire on
the American market.
I SALUTE YOU. O MOTORISTS tXTTLE HEAP HAS SFOKEH.
