WATER FRONT FIRE

Ater two hours hard battling- with
flames driven by a southerly wind,
members of the fire department suc
ceeded ; in subduing a blaze which
threatened to sweep the Northern
Pacific and Eastern & Western lum
ber, mills at an early : hour Friday
morning:. .
The fire started trom sparks falling;
on th roof of a frame building: belong-
i in to the Pacific Stoneware company
at OS Sherlock street. The first alarm
wag turned in at 5 :37 and was followed
i by two other alarms, calling; out nine en
gines., three trucks and two fireboata.
Tha fire was confined to the property
of tha Pacific Stoneware company with
slight damage to lumber sheds of the

erty is placed at $200. Mann stated that
his company carried 92000 Insurance on

The fire was discovered by a barn man
! of the Union Fuel company, who Imrae-
i diately notified W. C Spalding,! night
' watchman of the Pacific Stoneware com
pany, and hastened to turn In an alarm.
: Spalding climbed to the roof of the build
ing and fought the fire with a stream
t from a small hose until the arrival, of
" t the fire department. In spite of his ef-
i forts the blase gained rapid - headway
and 'Spalding was obliged to leap from
the falling roof to the ground to Bave his

of the north half of the structure, .where
the fire originated, was covered with

BLAZE AT STORAGE COMPANY
Fire caused by spontaneous combustion
resulted in $50 damage to the plant of
the Pacific Storage company,; 312 East
Madison street, between midnight and
1 a. m. Friday. The blaze is said to have
started- In wooden containers, holding
sawdust used in cleaning oil from the
concrete floors of the building. Several
hundred automobiles are stored 'in the
building, but the fire was extinguished
before . they : had been damaged. : The
