the cargo being handled by the Oregon
& Ocean corporation. She- carried 1600
. tons of steel and more than 5,000.000
feel of lumber, . on,e of the largest car
goes ever sent out of the, port.
For wheat loading, early In Septem
ber for the United Kingdom the steam
ship Minnie de Larrinaga has been
posted as a new charter. , She is now
en route from the Atlantic side and
will be due about August 28. Two
others of the Larrinaga line, .the Na
cito and Pilar, previously announced,
will load at Portland. All -three . will
take wheat for Kerr-Qlfford.
PORT TERMINAL! POCK WILL
BE RUSHED OS COOS BAY
Marnhfield, Or., Aug.- 21. Commis
sioners of the Port of Coos Bay have
decided to ruish the work of construct
ing the port terminal dock on Coos bay.
The site In the north end of Marshfield
has been purchased.. It will require 3000
piling to build the wharf. Bids will be
called ' for at ; once for furnishing- the
material needecl.
The port is also having built at Kruse
& Banks' shipyard In North Bend a
dredge which will be for exclusive
usOnslde the harbor. The port issued
$250,000 in bonds to pay for the wharf
and dredge.
LOS ANGELES FIRM GIVEN
FOUR TANKERS TO BUILD
Los Angeles. Cat, Aug. 21. (L N.. S.)
Contracts for the building of four oil
tankers, at a total cost of approximately
$8,000,000. have been let to the South
western Building Co. of this eity. Three
of the vessels, of 8400 tons each, are for
the Anglo-Saxon Oil Co. and One of 7500
tons Is for the Union Oil Co. It is estl
. mated that these contracts raise the to
tal valuation of tonnage now under con
struction here to approximately $30,000.

Oregon pioneers. Mr. Barlow has been
failing in health for two years, but his
condition did not become alarming until
a few days ago. -He is-survived by his
mother, Mrs. M. E. Barlow, two children,
Herbert and Vernice Barlow of 1 Salem ;
two sisters. Mr. George A. Harding
and Mrs. Nieta Barlow Lawrence of this
city, and a, brother. Frank T. ; Barlow

responsible for two divorce suits filed
In jthe circuit court here Friday. George
Morarlty.of West Linn brought suit
against his wife at noon and two hours
later the wife. Elizabeth Morarity, filed
her complaint. : Morarity alleges cruelty
and that his wife would not allow the
older three of the six children to work.
Mrs. Morarity in turn charges cruelty,
asserting, that her : husband was drunk
most i of the time sand had beaten her
and threatened to kill her. She alleges
that he gets S 25 5 a month, hut refuses
to support I tbe family, forcing the twof
older boys to provide for the household.

at Columbia beach circulated in Van
couver Friday afternoon, j Thorough In

covery that no drownings had taken
place at the beach and none of the Elks

when water from two lines of hose were
turned on the roof of the ! Del Monte

being over the heads of the exalted

Vancouver, Wash., Aug; 21. The fair
grounds have been purchased by D. J.
Bagley of The Dalles, Or, according to
announcement Friday. Bagley. a promi
nent stockman of Oregon, brought to
the races this year many racehorses.
The grounds will be used as a dairy
ranch, Bagley declared. He said, how-t-ever
that the tracks and the pavilions

service law and system was proposed to
the city council at; It meeting Friday

Service Employes association.' composed

civil servaee commissioners, who are now
selected by the mayor, be named : one
by the mayor, ' one by the association
and one by the voters, i The elected
member would draw a salary of $3000
a year and would bear title as secretary.
A series of proposed changes Include
the manner of examination of applicants
for civil Service jobs r and changes in
the matter of hearings for rule infrac
tions. All branches of the city govern
ment. Including the health bureau and
city attorney's office, would be brought
under civil service by the association
