Irwin of Wentworth & Ir win.! local , 'distributors of CMC trucks and Samson trucks and trac tors, - returning: from an extended trlD ! to the East, reports that Port land knows nothing: of real . traffic congestion. : "What the city was used toartng- the Shrine convention Is a regular every nay occurrence cago at the Intersection of Michigan .and: Woodward avenues. The po licemen at those corners where traf fic Is heavy are trained -men who make the wheels go 'round at ajl times, says Irwin, who was amazed at the smoothness wfth which r the bluecoats regulated the" flow of mo tor vehicles. i ; 'v. Irwin visited the factories, where his lines! are turned . out and also' went to Chicago, Detroit.; Milwaukee, James vlllei Wis., and Pontlac, Mich. . AUTO CREATION USES NBV METALS Many Discoveries Made in Find ing Best Materials to Use in ; Automotive Work. 'Much has been said of late about the automobile being a luxury," said a prominent automobile manufacturer recently, "but surely the people who are making; such statements have not taken the time and trouble to analyze the , automobile industry to see Just- what it has done for the advancement of the country. . When a certain class of business brands another business as not worth while, particularly when that business, or Industry, has : been approved by a whole'people, certain misunderstand ings arise which must be set at'rest. not made practical until ?, the : automo bile j manufacturers ggrt hold of it ; the Liberty engine, which made possible the airplane, in its present form ; the farm lighting equipment, which was invented and developed , by men in' the automo. bile 1 industry, and the various engines of war which made success possible in the I big conflict. These are the tank, submarine chaser," truck, airplane and tractor. ' . . -i f ; r .".' The motor . .car has done , more to develop good roads in ' the T last 10 years than: anything since roads were thought of. There is a big program on right now to build permanent highways throughout the nation, and it does not seem quite the , right thing to curtail an industry that has done so much for humanity in general. The action of the federal ; banking system and the tendency of certain of ficials at Washington to create dis criminatory laws are hampering influ ences, which will, affect the progress of industry and 1 seriously affect our national life. , . DISCOVERIES : MADE 3 Until the automobile came into being there ,was4 little eknown -'of-.' the "alloy steels .which -have been such factors in the development of the mechanical industry. When - the automobile men started out' to construct cars- they used the material that was on hand the - same that had been used in the construction- of the steam engine, ag ricultural machinery and the like but they soon found by experience that this material would -not stand up under the terrific grind .that an automobile . re ceived on the ordinary country road. The first thing : they did to get around this difficulty was to make the cars heavier. This made- them still worse, and in addition.it was not pos sible to get tires . that would . stand up underisucha lumbering machine. So they naturally went to the steelmakers and demanded material of a different nature. ; l - . The automobile' engineers worked out in their own laboratories many of the formulas, etc., that finally brought the steels to the perfection that they are at the: present time; As- a result of their work f and their demand on the steelmakers.' vanadium, nickel, chrom? ium and other high-grade steels have been developed which are now univer sally used in the construction of motor cars. . Without the development of alloy steels such as just j mentioned it would not be possible toi have the present motor - car. j -; ; I - . . . ALVMISUM IS USED But the use of! these, fine steels is not limited! to the' construction of au tomobiles. I Since the introduction of vanadiup-it has becom the standard steel for locomotive side : rods, which, previous ; to the development of ' the alloy metals, persisted in breaking and Injuring tbe engine crew. These special steels have also revolutionized the ma chine tool industry, resulting in the use of r the clash-gear - idea, which was looked upon previously as being funda mentally wrong. The automobile builders made the new Idea possible. Also, the multiple spindle drill press and milling machines originated .jwith the automobile- men. Aluminum : was almost unknown until the motor car makers began to use it in large quantities. Now it is .used in gigantic proportions, not only in motor cars, but in cooking utensils, etc. Other -things which bavebeen de veloped within reecnt years and which have been i of tremendous interest and value are the farm; tractor, which was 'Are there any exceptions to the prin ciple thatHke produces like?" "Certainly.? said' the Simp. "for In stance, there is the one of a soft tire causing considerable hard luck." Rowing Is One of Salesman's Pleasures J. B.' Kisky, : who is now ; holding an order book as a salesman for the Weller Motor company, selling Elgin Six and Westcott Six motor cars, is one -of the row's lively and most' enterprising sales men. Kisky Was formerly with the C L. tjosa Automobile : company, r Kisky, as well as having considerable ' prestige as a Knock-em-dead order taker, is an oarsman of merit, and has moved quite a goodly number of quarts of Willamette aqua pura during his activities with local boat clubs.
