The waya of the consumer are past
understanding-, ' Those . who have been
daily dealing; with the public are unable
to explain just why people will complain
bitterly because of the Men cost of
products, and whenever they are offered
supplies at lower - prices, they fall to
purchase. 5 , i f
Attention ia just- now called to the fact
that with onions selling at the lowest
prices for many: years, the public baa
decided that It does not want any. .
Cabbage sold extremely well and freely
when prices : were high. . but the public
does not care to purchase stocks when
they are low as at present.
- When potatoes were much higher than
they r are today, the public bombarded the
grocers ' with . orders but with prices
dropping, consumers appear to have lost
their appetite for stock.; ' '
The same Is true as regards cherries.

Those who contracted their wheat some
time ago as high as $2.50 per bushel at
country points, are the envied ones In
their sections, r So severe has been. the
decline In prices since then that few buy
ers are wlllinff to admit that they made
purchases. i 'M""'J!": -'I'"-
Jut at thi time there i a lull ia th buy
ing of wheat at) Pacific Northwest points. With
oarvest iurt sUrting in the earlier sections and
with deliveries torn; time awar, buyer are not
seeking stocks at the moment.
While It is generally anticipated that wheat
price will, not go very low thi season, much
depend upon the foreign situstion and especial,
ly the exchange market. , With further decline
in foreign money it is difficult for Europe to
purchas at extreme prices in tW country.,,
A new high record baa been established again,
for mills tuffs in the local market. Some of the
mill are asking as high as $59 a ton at the
mills, .while a few are still offering at $68.60.
Both of these are high records. There is so
little stock of feed avilbl that it ia impossible
to' fill 'order. Miller are not anxious to open
their plants a yet because of general trade con
ditions and there ia little mlllrun in aighu -,
. Broomhall cabled from Liverpool: " i
The general position of wheat indicate that
European requirement of thi cereal will be lib
eral, poibly 520.000,000 HiwheU to 560 AO0,.
000 bushel and importer will have to rely 'large
ly upon North America for those supplies. Crop
in Australia and Argentina are now promuing
better, but the old crop in these respective
countries have been about cleared away and the
new crop will be available until the beginning
of next year. Tb crop ia India will approxi
mate 368.000.000 bushels, but the some con
sumption will be greater than the prewar aver
age of about 320,000,000 bushels, so it i
not safe to "reckon on obtaining more than 30,
000 000 bushel of wheat from thi grower
Authorities will not permit export of wheat un
til after October. Tb food controller of Ureal
Britian ha stated that the British termer may
obtain fully 140 per quarter for the coming
harvest of wheat, thi Will, come to about $3.41
per bushel. ,

There ' is : no short interest of im
portance in the stock market because
professionals had ' been working on- the
long side up to little more than a week
ago. In the reaction, that shook prices
down materially for a week, the traders
were unable to get short many of them
unwilling because the market is on such
a level that it seems Impossible for It
to go in any direction except up
' Money renewed and- loaned at 8 per
cent all day. It Is a money market now
more than arnythlng else that is re
straining trading in the street- -:
At the very opening of the market
there was a slight : drop but . averaged
less than a point throughout the list. ;
There is very cheerful talk about the
