BANKER S FRIENDS
I IDEA THAT
HE KILLED SELF
i '
. Information about Fred N. Braley,
banker of Earre, Vt., who has been
j missing since February. 1919, and
1 whose will and other papers were
.found in two class jars .Hidden in
the wood of Macleay park, contin-
; ues to reach persons in Portland in-
' terested in the case.
A communication was received hy.TJie
. Journal Tuesday mornlror from W. C.
Johnson Jr., jL-ashier of the Peoples Na
tional bank of Barre, which repeated
much of the information already given
about Braley by relatives and friends,
-and expressed the opinion held by his
former banking associates that he. had
: made unwise . personal investments.
: ; ' Braley apparently left no unsatisfied
- 'obligations when be departed; from Barre
. in December, 1918, Johnson's letter said.
He was. supposed at one time to be
worth about $50,000, but his associates

, After leaving Barre, the banker -went
to the Hotel Knickerbocker in New
York. Correspondence went back to,yer-
roont from that address. Soon"afterward
be left for San Francisco, register ins a'
the Chancellor hotel, from which he de
parted February 4, 1919. A letter from
San Francisco dated January 21. iis.
received by Johnson, said he expected
to go to IjOS Angeles or Portland "u
look the country over." . ,
Vlohnson said an extensive Investigation
had been carried on by the bank as well
as by Braley s relatives since that time,
but without result.
"Mr. Braley was a man who always
held his own counsel, and even his inti
mate friends were reluctant to inquire
in regard to his personal affairs." wrote
Johnson. "It is not known by us what
his intentions were when he left Barre
and we doubt very much if he really
knew himself." ," ,
SUICIDE HELD TTSMKEIT
"Mr. Braley had many frtends here in
Barre and the board of directors of this
bank was sorry he felt the necessity' of
r. signing -from this connection. His
advice and counsel was always good and
he did a great deal to build up the busi
ness of the bank in its earlier days.
"It seems rather Improbable to us that
Mr. Eraley should commit suicide." -Braley
was described as being about
six feet tall, dark, with bushy hair, dark
eyes and smooth face, weighing about 175
pounds. ; He was said to look younger
than his actual age of 60 years. He was
rather deaf, Braley was a man who had
traveled quite extensively and knew how
to care for himself. He was described
as being diffident in manner and slow
in conversation f f :
