ALASKA SALMON
PRICES HIGHER
Opening ' prices pn the 1920 pack of
Alaska packed salmon were announced
Monday by Demi rig Gould 4 Co. of Bel
Ilngh&ra, Wash., as follows, according to
advices received in the local trade : Alas
ka Reds, tails, $3 Jti per dozen cans ;
Alaska medium reds, $2.00; Alaska pinks
$1.50 ; Alaska chums $1.15. all in one
pound tins..
This is an eirepOonally high opening price,
test season's being around tne 82.50 mark for
the reds. So f ar u e known ia the weal
trade thia ia the highest price ever asked for
the Alaska packed stock.
Packers of fancy Columbia river Chinook aal
mbn have not entered the market with 1920
Quotations, but it is understood that a few
sales have been njade at $3.90 per doaen or
fancy Chinook, spring pack, in one-pound tails;
84. 00 in one-pound flats, and 32.50 ia
pound flats. Whether or not this price will be
mamtalned is problematical, as tne i ninooa sal
mon umially command a one third higher price
than th Alaska pack. 00 account- of its -,u-perior
quality. , - '
8 far this season the pack en the Columbia
river is up to normal, but if the water in the
river does not clear up soon it will fall below.
Chinook salmon will not enter fresh water
that is dirty, so seiners are not catching tuany
fish. : Experienced fishermen say the salmoa
wait outside the mouth ef the river for clear
water. As soon aa the dirty water has passed
they expect large schools of fish to make an
effort to get into tne nver at tiie same time.
Fishermen hone to make record catches at thto
time. TroUers working in - the ocean outside
the mouth of the river also report poor oa.tr hex.
Monday afternoon a member of a motion
picture service ealled on local Ash experts te
gain information regarding salmon -canneries
and sealing grounds, in order that he uitht
photograph the industry and reproduce the pic
tures on the screen. lie expects to leare Poit-

few days. jr

The hay market this aeaaon ia a rather
mixed affair, according to a weekly trade
letter sent out by a wholesale dealer In
Northwest hay. "The growers as rule
are very independent and are financially
able to hold if the prices are not satis
factory,' the letter continues.; "In case
prices start lower than they are willing
to accept, , they may hold off selling,
which will hold up prices in the first
part of the season.
"At this time th growers are , holdlmr for
$22.00 tit 28.00 per: ton shipping point, or
basis $26.60 e 27.60 Portland delivery. The
question ia aa to what extent the growers will
sell and aa to how th market will be supplied
during th first two or tare month ef th
bson.
"Th buyers are expecting lower price ' and
for that reaxon they are not inclined to buy
for future delivery, at least not at tins time. Tne
last rains were very general aver the Willamette
valley, central and Eastern Oregon. Washington,
Idaho and Montana and were a life sever to
the grass and very much affected tha demand
for bar in all' sections. There Is practically so
demand in Bortland for dairy hay at the present
time and don t expect the demand will
mence for 30 to 60 days."

New Tork Times During the - final
days ef last week the market waa ealled
upon to absorb heavy proru tawng saies
and suapeeded In doing this fairly well,
since a .public participation has been
brought into the trading, buying from
this quarter helping to support price.
Yesterday, however, It appeared that the
weight of selling waa too heavy to be
overcome easily and the prices went
steadily lower with quite a drive against
many Issues in the last hour. The de
cline was undoubtedly influenced to a
considerable degree by short selling, the
professionals having again assumed the
bear side. '

,. ... .,. By Broadan Wall
New York. July ilS. Long stocks
old-last Friday under ? cover of a
manipulated advance j of Reading
and made their influence felt In Wall
street Monday, when the purchasers
had to pay for them.: Prices de
clined everywhere. .(The market
opened - with a show i of ? strength,
with Reading at the head of the rail
road list. Industrials faded from
the opening. : In the afternoon even
the railroads yielded and the market
closed weak and active, with mate
rial net losses everywhere.
This setback to the stock market Is -due
to reasons well known. The most
Important one is the fact that crops are
going to be so big that a sever d credit
strain this fall is certain.
Money did not go above I per cent.
Professional opinion as to what rates
will prevail in the near future . ranged
from 6. per cent to 40 per cent. The 8
per cent rata is what one ef the 1 arrest
investment heuees expects to see before
the end of this week. The 40 per cent
rate is what oneof the big pool opera
tors says will be charged before October.
It was perfectly safe, to advance the
railroad ' stocks under pool manlpula.
tion because owners of those stacks have
tltem at such high prices that there was
no danger of meeting any selling ot im
portance. -.
When announcement : was mads that
Allan Ryan had retired from the Strom

the stock Tf nearly 7 points.
