THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL 14 SATURDAY, JULY 10, 1920.! PORTLAND. OREGON. Slany Churches Cnter 3nto Mliance Mith Mature in l)dldih ummer ervices 2 BIG GATHERINGS ARE FOUND AT VARIOUS PLACES Church people love the out of doors as much as anyone. Some churches have found . this rule so true that they have announced dis continuance of their Sunday evening services. Other churches who say "we will never quit - till ' the devil does" have determined to enter al liance with the attractions thrown out by nature at this season of the year, and ; are holding; open air meetings. '-V." One of the' largest gatherings of tjils nature Is the Apostolic faith camp meeting, at Fifty-second street and Sixty-fifth avenue, southeast, just "across the! street" from Portland city limits. A 10-acre tract, covered with small fir trees, old stumps and hazel brush at the corner of these two 'roads was recently purchased by -one of the leading men of the mission.- Within a short time men who had been tricked up in the North End district and converted in the mission were put to work on this tract. The ob jectionable shrubbery and stumps have been rooted out, and a clean, white fence built around the tract. Arches are built over the five entrances and -words of scripture referring to the heavenly gates are printed i therein. The minute one sets foot inside the camp he is impressed with the solemnity of the grounds. Nature has not been rudely disturbed, but nevertheless every need of the tampers has been considered. The popular "sawdust" trail, starts from every gate. All roadways and paths which wind through the grove, are made of sawdust. CONVENIENCES ARE MANY The children play among the trees, en Joying the protection afforded from the hot sun above. Inspection of tfte grounds reveal a restaurant, srrocerv store. Bra- rage for the four gospel wagons of the mission, chemical fire station, system of garbage collection and modern sewage system, v A few of the trees were cleared away near the roadway to make room for the mammoth tent in which religious services tare held. Over: 1000 people can be ac commodated at each service. :-. AH under brush about the main entrance for pe destrians has been cleared away and beautified with flowers. Strangers who visit the mission nightly find the ground policed by members of the mission, who guard the tents of the campers and the parked automobiles of visitors. . To lessen the fire hazard a Portland fireman was asked to prepare a set of rules.- These have been Incorporated as part of the laws of the camp grounds and are conspicuously posted. The Apostolic Faith camp grounds may be reached by the Woodstock car. Serv- PI PC T PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH HTH AND ALDER STREETS TH E NEW PASTOR Rsv. Harold L. Bowman, D.
