Watch Her Ey)z To Tell Her Morals MODESTT Is not to be measured b the length of a skirt, nor the quan tity of soft, dimpled cuticle that Is dis played. 'Tis the girl who can roll a wicked eye our budding manhood must religiously avoid if twentieth century morals, -or perhaps the lack of them, are to.be Improved. So says Mrs. Jams Lees "Laldlaw, pillar of the "Four Hundred." suffra gist and now champion of modern styles which, according to the deacons and elders, are striving more than ever to conserve cloth and boost prices. "A girl may have skirts that sweep the ground and still be a menace from the look In her eye." says Mrs. Laid law. "Modesty and good manners are Innate. This outcry against the women, young and old. of our generation as ex ploiters of Immodest dress is unfair and preposterous." . For instance, Mrs. Lsidlaw points out. the peasant girls of . Europe have been wearing knee length skirts for genera tions and no one has thought of acrus- mg them of immodesty, because they are demure and make their eyes be have. If the moralists of the United States are going to extremes, why. don't they go the whole distance and make it a crime for a woman to Uncover 'her faoe In public. Mrs. Laidlaw suggests. "Some men are everlastingly dictating what woman's dress shall be," she con tinues. "I want to say to them that no man who has anything important to think about bothers his head over women's clothes." f The only disturbing thing Mrs. Laid law finds 1s the cost of new clothes. In these days of soaring prices and prof iteering, she. suggests that "American women wear their old clothes, "whether they are knee length or ankle length." "I say again, good manners have nothing to do with clothes, and I re sent any criticism of our frank and modest-American girls. The short skirt has its best argument on the score of health, with convenience added." Miss Adeline Sterling, corresponding secretary of the New York City League for Women Voters, emphatically sup ports what Mrs. Laidiaw said, and adds: ,i "There-is nothing to worry the clergy or women's clubs about the dress of women today. And- If, as It Is so freely charged, it Is difficult to distinguish, a member of a respectable congrega tion from another kind of woman on the street, it merely Indicates that the ob server, is guilty of one of two things profound Innocence or profound sophis tication. "If the girls skewer up their hair and camounage their ears, lift their skirls or bare their throats to wintry blasts, these are only the extravagances of fantastic tastes that have always been the concomitant of the great struggles of history. Excess In one direction Is sure to bring Its reaction. The suggestion- that all women are Delilahs be cause of the present day silk stocking "parades Is an absurd reflection on a sightly procession." Mrs. Grace R. Forsythe. district su perintendent of schools In New York. Is not half as much disturbed over the styles as she Is over rouge and lip .sticks. Girls between the ages of. 14 .and 20. she says, may be seen calmly displaying their paint boxes ; and red pencils In crowded subways. "The fault is with the mothers," she jx plains "I have great praise for those schools hat have adopted dress re strictions." World Has Colic "Peace has been picked green and the world has the colic." said Rev. C. A. Alden of COlumbus.Ohio. The minister, may be right, but ; most of the world seems to be on Its back, an uncomfort able position for one suffering from COlIC. -. ' ' : . .
