Stearns was assessed $25 by Municipal Judge Rossman this morning as the culmination of a near-riot following the electrical parade Friday night. H. S. Hammond filed a suit against Lee West, doing business under the name of the Laurel Rose ga rage. In which he sets forth that he left his automobile at this garage to be cared-for and .redelivered,, when called for, and that while the car was thus out of Hammond's immediate control. It was damaged so as to be wholly lost to Hammond. ' V MAN WHO STRUCK OPPONENT WITH BEER BOTTLE FINED $100 Bert Ingram 'appeared before Circuit Judge McCourt Friday for sentence for MaauU. with a dangerous weapon. - Ingram formed one of a party of six that took an automobile from the down . town district and went on a Joy ride out beyond Lents. The party had an altercation over a girl and Ingram says he was beaten up by J. S. Primrose. On the way back he struck Primrose back jf the ear with a beeri. bottle. Sheriff Martine was here in at tendance at the Shriners conclave, and through the activities of Deputy Sheriffs Christoferson and Kendall the man sought by Martine was located and placed In custody. , e DIVORCE CASE IS BITTERLY ' CONTESTED AND WIFE WINS Circuit Judge Taswell today granted a divorce to Clara Marie Goetten from Walter Frank Goetten and gave her com plete custody of their child, a baby of 16 months, and Judgment for $30 a month for , Its support. This was a bitterer contested case, the trial of which began on May 20 and continued several days. The charge was cruelty. Goetten charged his wife, in croaa-complalnt, with lm proprieties with other men. - In the tes timony it developed he had chalked the soles of his wife s shoes, so as to deter mine whether she put them on and went out while he was away from home. Donovan -against the Wapampa Steamship company for dam ages because of an injury to his foot while an employe of the company. Dono van's toot was ran over by a truck which he and a fellow employe were op erating in the transfer of cargo, August 10. 1117. Judge Stapleton held that. the Injuries Were not the fault of any defect in machinery f appliances or power pro vided by the steamship company or the result of any order by a superior which it was the duty of Donovan te obey, and that his fellow workman wae not a fore man and Donovan was not obliged to take orders from him. Sues for Son's. Death Mrs. Anna McCoy Maddoz filed suit in , the . United States district court Friday against the Kagle Lumber com pany of West Timber, Or., to recover $20,000 damages for the death of her son, Frank McCoy. 15 years of age. The boy was killed by a falling tree November 19, 1819, while employed as a whistle boy by the company. R. Bryson. the one member of the board against whom the feeling of animosity was strongest. He was replaced by Dr. P. J. Bartle. the vote standing 1162 for Bartle and 722 for Bryson. Charles M. Emery and Hollis W. Llbby, business men, suppos edly in sympathy with the teachers in the controversy; were also elected. '.- Following the election and believed to have been caused by It. came the resig nation of S. M. Calkins, appointed some months ago to fill a vacancy. His suc cessor has not been selected. With the resignation of Superintendent Ruther ford and hta departure from the -city, and a radical change in the personnel of the board, it Is expected that the schools of Eugene will be conducted In the en suing year without friction. Sam Si Goldsmith Sees Night Parade And Dies Suddenly After witnessing the electric parade Friday night, Sam 8. Goldsmith of the May apartments, who has been employed as a traveling salesman for Mason, Ehr- man & Co. for 20 years, died of heart trouble. Goldsmith spoke of being tired and shortly-; after he retired after the parade was over he was seised with pains and shortly afterward expired. Goldsmith was born In Eugene, April 17, 1855. Just previous to his death he was In . the employ of the Vancouver Flour ' Mills. He is survived by his widow and t two children,- Mrs. Arthur Mayer of Portland and Mrs. J. Miller of Gary, Ind. Handcuffs Worn by Escaped Prisoner Are Found Broken Roseburg, June 26.- The handcuffs with which Glenn Duncan., alleged auto mobile thief, fled, manacled, were found broken in a hog pen a short distance south of the Myrtle creek bridge, where the young man Jumped from an auto mobile. Allen com pany at Broadway and Morrison streets. Muir was removing decorations from the window when the top of a palm be came entangled in several electric wires and ignited. More than 600 Shriners from 42 different cities In 23 states were guests of Astoria Friday, ar riving from Portland on a special train at noon. Immediately upon their arrival- a baked salmon dinner was served. after which they were .taken in autos about the city.
