June' 1 8.-The seventy-sixth com
mencement at Willamette university
was opened -with an address by Pres
ident P.' 1. Campbell of the Univer
sity of Oregon in which he expressed
appreciation for the aid extended in
the recent millage hill campaign. . ;
The commencement procession formed
at Eaton hall, with the board of trus4
tees and members of the faculty in the
lead, the latter In cap and gown, and
with the seniors following.. The exer
cises were held In the First Methodist
Kplscopal church. The march was played
by Professor T. S. Roberts, the Scripture
lesson was read by Dr. J. W. Gordon of
Portland and the invocation given by
President Henry J. Tafbot of the Kim
ball School of Theology. A solo by Miss
Marguerite Cook' of ' Portland preceded
the address. . .-,

wholesome influence. Ruth Taylor of

Rides 13 Hours for
Doctor After Cheek
Torn Away by Horse
Bend. June IS. With the skin of one
cheek almost entirely torn away and a
broken nose, J. H. Helfrich, a cattleman
of the Hemstead valley rode 95 miles
from his ranch Wednesday' morning to
receive medical attention. Helfrich was
separating cattle At his ranch.
: The horse upon which" be was riding
became frightened when a sagehen flew
from under its feet, Helfrich was thrown
under the horse, one foot striking his

The' injured man mounted the horse,
rode 20 miles to bis rancn. then took a
car and drove 65 miles into Bend, where
17 stitches were taken In his face. Hel
frich did not lose consciousness during

Users Are Settled
Upon Stipulation

Baker. June 18.A. water, suit involv
ing 20 water users on East Pine creek
has been decided . by Judge Gustar" An
derson . of the local circuit court ac
cording to a stipulation that was ef
fected between the contestants, -A. p.
Greener, C A. Oliver and others against
J. M. Cole and others. The stipulation
readjusts the water rights of all - users
and provides for Kite appointment of a
water ,: master or ditch tender by the
court, following recommendations mads
by a committee of three water users,
elected at aa annual meeting. . The num
ner or votes to M cast by each user
shall be determined by the number of
shares or inches of water to which he is
entitled. The decision also allows des
ignated water users the right to use
ditches belonging jto the plaintiffs on
condition that they bear the expense of
enlarging; the channels sufficiently to
accommodate the extra flow of water.
