Will the price of fruit reach an ex
treme level this season? -
This is the question that Is alike
worrying the producer, the packer, the
wholesaler, retailer and - the consumer.
All are interested in this prospects for
the price. j ,
' One thing is absolutely certain, the
situation today reflects a condition that
is most unhealthy. The average packer
of fruits is said to hold about 10 per
cent of his normal contract, from Job
bers. ' , . : ; ,' V
Wholeealers say ajhey have ; oartracted for
srnall lot of canned fruit but that they do not
intend to do their usual volume of buying until
they see what ia going to happen to the market
and price The retailer has been unwilling- to
purchase futures cm canned goods. - For that
reason the wholesaler or jobber is not going
to take 'the chance of having high-priced fruit
oa hi shelves and this has thrown to matter
up to the packer, who says that ha don't feel
like paying out big money for fruit aad sugar
and thea take a very long chance on getting
The producer baa en tha ether band decided
that he must have mora instead of lass money
for his product and then the matter stands. .
One big wholesaler expressed the opinion that
both the packer and the producer were getting
too couch money for their product but this Is
denied by the latter. Retailers have the beet
sort of alibi and the situation remsin dead

corn and oats to new high prices on tha crop.

bring in new buying, considerably increasing the
competition for offerings. Highest prices of the'
dsy were made near the close.
Spot markets ruled firm - to higher,' which
proved surprising to the shorts, and when they
attempted to cover their line price advanced

After an hour or so of narrow irregularity,
ia the course of which a few specialties experi
enced broadening, in some caaea upward and ia
others downward. Ilk Barrett company. National
Aniline and U. 8. Realty, oa the oa hand, and
Crucible Steel oa the other, the Bat showed
strength under the leadership of the Steel group.
The weakness in Crucible Steel, that issue de
clining soma 7 or 8 points within tha first three
hours of trading, was traceable to the report that
tha directors would declare s stock dividend at
tha forthcoming meeting, but might cut the cash
dividend. Thia was not confirmed. Republic
and Vans1 turn Steel were outstanding features
of , strength, as was Bethlehem B, which more
than recovered- the dividend . coming off today.
U. S. Steel ruled fractionally above 93. The
equipments were ia good - form likewise The
oils wen ultimately bid up moderately.' Copper

trading. With the exception of Crucible most
of the steels, retained, tha gain made earlier
in tha day. About two points were gained in

"Every effort will be made to finance

in the Middle West that this will be
easily done. The banks have been cur
tailing credit for all except essential

while slowing up business, the results

Detroit there had been a great many
men laid off. due to the fact that auto
mobile distributors throughout the coun

The action of the federal reserve bank
in increasing the rediscount rate is

Bond dealers in the Middle West
are experiencing a ready demand for
bonds. This was evidenced by the
rapidity with which the Belgian and
the Chicago A Northwestern loans were
put over. The Investors who have been
holding off for the peak of high yields
are taking advantage of the wonderful
opportunities and buying extensively.
Whether- bottom prices ; have been
reached does not matter, but the fact

transportation facilities, and increase

ing. We realise that the hotels win be
crowded and that bankers must be
where they can be found easily. For
this reason we have invited them to

their headquarters and to have their

under and at the same time facilitate
