OLD POTATOES AT
12 CENTS POUND
By Hyiaaa H. Cobea
Potato prices have again broken an
high records In the Portland market.
Old crop stock Is today selling as high
aa 12c a pound, while new stock is quot
ed "at practically the same price. '
' Demand for old potatoes is exceedingly strong
at thia time, while country offerings and city
holdings sre limited. Marvin A Co. had on
display this morning some potatoes from near
Forest Grove that were not only averagins the
biggest sice seen here during the season, but
were as firm ss rocks, a very unusual thing
for this late in tha season.
Ordinary quality old potatoes ara being quoted
at 10 11c a pound generally by the whole
sale trade, this likewise being saw high record
lor aucn oiiennga.
New sotatoea ara in -much mora liberal sup
ply here, but reports from California indicate
that the 'Garnet season is ever and tha ship
ment of whites ts Just starting. . -
. indication do not point to any towering ox
new potato prices within tha immediate: future

The season bad been unfavorable and many

A cold, backward spring, with eold ntgnts. nign

Crop conditions In Oregon were gen
erally favorable for the week. The rains
have - dona much to aid production of
practically all farm stuffs.
Edward L. Wells of the Portland ofOoe ef
the weather bureau adriaes: l
The forenart of tha week waa warm and dry.
The latter part waa cool except in some of the
eestern counties, wttn copious to neavy rains in
western, central and northeastern eountiea j he
warm weather rained rsoid srowth of vegetation
except where mot tore waa insufficient. The
rains were or great beneitt to all crops ana
gramas and served materially to delay the season
of forest firs hazard. Farm work programed
aaasfacutruy. :
Soma lata Dotatoee remain to be planted.
Early potatoes are generally fair to good except
where injured by frost. New potatoes are in use
la a tew localities. Early garden vegetaotee are
plentiful in market. Hope are being trained.'
w inter wheat had begun to sutler 1
droojrht in manv localities, and was
short in those localities. Tha rains will be of
great benefit, and will insure a good yield ef
winter wheat over' considerable - areas in west
ern. central end northeastern eountiea. Spring
wheat had. not ret suffered seriously i:
drought except over limited - areas, and has bean
given aa excellent start - by the rain. , Hye is
beading in soma of the more elevated district.
Cutting of rye for hay continues. Barley is
filling well in Jackson oounty, while in Union
eountv- seedina has only recently been finished.
Planting of corn is practically complete, and in
tha areea where corn is grown generally there
is now sufficient moisture to bring it up. Some
early Diamine ara being cultivated. Tha warm
weather early lo the week was favorabla for
isorn. where the soil waa not too dry.
The condition of fruit is very uneven. - There
ts much complaint of dropping -of pears and
prunes, and in some localities apples have not
set well. ; The damage to trees by the December
freese is' becoming mora apparent aa the season
advancea in soma localities. The rain baa bean
of great benefit to berries in the northwestern
berry growing districts. Strawberries and early
cherries are ripening m the Willamette valley.
The : warm weather early in the week was
favorable for ; irrigated alfalfa, and the rains
of the latter part helped pastures, ranges, and
hav crone, except In the southeastern counues.
Cuttinc of the first croo of clover is under way
in tha Willamette valley, with a rather light
yield. The range is drying rapidly in southeast
ern eountiea. Stock is generally in good condi
tion. Shearing of sheep is nearly complete.

Cherry Contracts
Kesumed at Twelve
Cents Pound Here
Some small contracting by local canneries la
reported in the cherry market. While the aea
aoo started with liberal sales around 15c a
pound for Royal Anna, tha present value is not
above 1 2c and gome cannera are not willing to
contract freely at that.
That the cherry Terop in the immediate vicinity
of Milwsnkie ia ia excellent condition is the
statement of John Cole, an orchard 1st, also a
partner in the wholesale firm of Ben Levy A
Co. According to Cole, the cherry output oi his
section will be aa great aa, if not greater than,
a year ago. The beariest yields sre anticipated
from the Lamberts.
James Cherry of M osier grows cherries and
he eaya conditions in that section are Quite fair.
The Moaier section contracted its fruit some
time ago to the Starr Packing company of Port
land at 15c pound for Royal Anne.. .
According to Cherry, the apple crop of his
section has not been greatly curtailed in volume,
although the big production of a year ago ia
not anticipated. The Quality indicates the usual
Moaier standard.
