thing' wrong with this convention,
or with Its preliminary ' "arrange
. ments. I've been here 10 hours
now and not a soul has whispered
the jnslde low-down In my ear. This
Isn't usual and it .isn't right., ,
s Any other convention s would -be dif
ferent. By this time the stuff that roes
in at one ear and out both ears would
have been busy taking- it -in and. letting
It out. The inside low-down is what
you get from the early arrivals. s The
earlier arrivals get it from .the other,
earlier arrivals of four years ago. eight
years ago multiply indefinitely .by four
they would have had it all .ready for
us comparatively late comers. ' In strict
est confidence, they, would -'have laid
down exactly what was due to happen
at any given stage of, the week's pro
ceedings. :,-."
OLD TIMERS DISAPPOINTED
All the old timers are here but they
haven't a thing to whisper. This goes
for the distinguished Washington corre
spondents -and for the political experts
from all the. home town papers. Don't
put - this down against the newspaper
men, however They know what's do
ing:, all right. The trouble Is there isn't
anything doing.
Not .usual, it is not right, for this
reason: It. indicates an apathy that
cannot be called good for. the Ameri
can people. What this -country needs
today, to speak in the senatorial phrase,
is a good fight. Unless this convention
develops one, all the turmoil that is
boiling within the people will find no
useful outlet.

of things is hard to say. National
Chairman Witl Hays recognized the
need of a first-class Irish picnic within
the ranks of,, the Republican party
months ago,- and has been bending his
energies toward promoting one. He did
it by working toward a free, and fair
convention.' Perhaps the lack of fight
ing spirit thus far shown is due to the
lack of a tangible target for attack.
The old guard has furnished that tar
get ; but, while the inner loop hotels
are filled with delegates ready to fight
th old guard at the dr6p of a hat,
they haven't found any - good reason
yet to consider that ' the hat has been
dropped. Johnson has talked of fight,
and so has Moses, but neither of them
is absolutely sure with whom he's talk
ing about fighting.-')
BATTLE LOOKS TAME

is going to be the most peaceable battle
ever fought. (
Meantime, any man who needs or de
sires a little national advertising has
a grand opportunity In. this convention
city. If he wilt drop into Chicago with
something worth writing about, he Will
find the reporters, who outnumber the
j delegates two to one. ready and eager
to do him a good turn. - .

looked upon as closing: the door to gen

tions, through practical determination
of how the states would stand on their

get under way after the initial test of

Investigation has disclosed that there
has been considerable strength developed

it was learned today that Hoover's name
may not be presented to the convention
in the first group of nominations, but
withheld until his organization can bring
their second choice strength into play.
