c THE OREGON SUNDAY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, -SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE- 6, 1820. TRUCK PLAYS BIG PART -H SHIPPERS' DUP AD HLuULnli II M HE Upon Ability of Transportation Head to 1 Keep Loads' Moving Depends Success of Service.; -"Keep your trucks movingr," the 1 first, thing a shipper tells his superintendent of transportation. If rthat shipper does not know 'enough to tell his employe, then h will never be a successful shipper.- Men engaged In ths movement of mer chandise depend upon their trucks for - their Income and livelihood. -Failure to keep a truck on the road la one way of cutting the bank roll at the end of the month. - Upon intelligent dispatching and rout ing of trucks depends1 their profitable operation. In fact, these are the chief duties of the superintendent in charge of the operation of trucks. His ability to keep paying loads moving win zneas ' i tire the success of their service. System . should . underlie the work of -the dispatcher and router. He should hsve a complete knowledge of the day's work at least 24 hours In advance it ' possible. Upon this' Information he can chart a schedule that will eliminate all waste time, distance and motion. . To route the V trucks, an intimate knowledge is necessary of the geography and topography of the scene of opera tions, whether it be city or rural terrl tory. The dispatcher and router should know the density of traffic at various hours of the day. He should know the ,hest hours for loading or unloading at various shipping and delivery points. - It is the aim of the dispatcher to keep truck traffic moving past his shipping platform in a cycle. He must avoid, if possible, the congestion of his entire fleet at the shipping platform, compelling part of the trucks to remain idle while watting for loading or unloading crews. To aid him -in assigning the loads to units of the fleet and to map out time - saving schedules for their operation, the dispatcher usually makes use of a , dis patch sheet. This record will show at a glance the nature of load, the distance, the time of departure, the destination and the probable time of return of any truck in the fleet. That the installation of an efficient dispatching f system is profitable is proved by the experience of an operator of 24 large trucks who in one year saved close to 30,000 in operation and main tenence expense through the elimina tion of idle time and wasted travel. OOHHRVI flAtOUNI-. Great Air Cushions Make Using Trucks Easy for Farmers ', Manufacturers' claims that the giant pneumatic tire solves the motor truck problem for the general farmer are be ing Justified day by day, .according to the dealers, who declare a constantly Increasing number of motor trucks en gaged in farm work or destined for that service are being equipped with the big air cushions. r t The growing popularity of the larpe , pneumatic cords among farmers lies in the fact that, in general, the truck used on the farm, if It is to be efficient, must be able to give more than one class of aervice. - It must be .able not . only to travel all kinds of roads, but also on occasion to move in plowed fields, if necessary. Pneumatic tires permit the trucks to give this service. The truck (equipped with them can negotiate bad places with ease, and can travel lit all kinds of weather.' -.'.-- - The present day farmer Is an up-to-date business man. He is interested In v getting his products to market with as little shrinkage as possible. This means he must get them there quietly. Pneu .matlcs speed delivery, it is claimed. They are especially to be preferred in hauling milk. Milk delivery is a deli cate job, yet speed is required if deliv ery la to be made while the milk is quite : fresh. In the hauling of eggs by truck they are also valuable. Their superior cusmoning qualities mean fewer eggs ,f CONSERVE , GASOLINE :.:.::, Goody ear 's New Tire f Plant Will Be Run On Metric Basis That the big plant of the Goodyear nre ft Kubber company of California, . now nearing completion at Xjrm Aneelp. wilt be operated on the metric basis, was the assertion of Burgess JDarrow, chief . of the technical service of that company, at the recent World Metric standardisa tion conference in San Francisco.- ; " .The metric system received legal sanc tion In the United States as far back as 1868, . but has never been extensively used. The rapid growth; of this com pany's export trade, however, demanded tiat tire sizes be shown In metric units, as the American markings meant prac tically nothing to many other countries. Sc the double marking system - was adopted, showing the tire sixe in Inches .and in millimeters. "This method of marking greatly sim plified the marketing of tires in foreign countries, as it permitted the user to use the term he understood best, said Mr. Darrow. - "For the tire manufacturer the use of metric units provides two well defined advantages, being decimal they are easily and accurately calculated, and being in almost universal use in other -countries the tire sizes stated in me trio terms may 'be. understood the world over. ; "American tire sixes are expressed by the cross section diameter and the out side diameter. s Metric tire sixes are de termined by the cross section diameter mi the size of the rim with which the t.'re is to be used. For instance, in metric terms a 1 0x3 tire becomes a 90-585, v ich means a cross section diameter of SO millimeters and a rim diameter of 685 millimeters." When two gasoline dealers declared a competitive war here the street in the vicinity.- of ' the two places .became so clogged with automobiles 'and people that a riot ' call was sent in " to police headquarters. The price had gene down to 15 cents a gallon, and one dealer wa preparing a sign which read :. "Three gallons for 10 cents. Famous Track Wrecked by Xiood year People to Give Room for Homes of Workingmen . ! In a few days the famous Asfcot speedway at Los Angeles, CaJ., long the best known automobile racetrack on the Paclfie coast, will exist only in the : memory; of the many thou sands of racing fans that have sat- wild-eyed -In Its roomy grandstand following their favorite driver in his coarse around the track. " "When it became known that the speed way site was included in the plans of the Goodyear Tire A Rubber company of California for a i great housing project including 800 houses to be known as the Goodyear Gardens, and that the old land mark would ultimately be compelled to give way to the stern demand of indus try, there was much speculation as to Just ' how the dismantling of . the track would be accomplished., WBECKTffO SIMPLE " ; How many tons of dynamite would it take to blow up the mile of solid concrete in the race track? : Or how many men with sharp picks : would - be needed to take It up? Or Just how would it be done anyway?:: ' ? " v ' In actual practice, the disposal of the track had been much simpler than even the engineers in charge anticipated. For five days a huge tractor slowly and la boriously dragged a five-point plow, of the type commonly used on the western prairies, around the mile of solid con crete turning it up a foot at a time. It was found that underneath the hard crust of stony concrete that had formed on the surface, the composition of the track was relatively soft and pliable and the powerful tractor had no trouble pull ing the plow through it- After the plow ing operation a half dozen teams with gigantic scoops removed the loosened concrete after which it was hauled away to be used in filling up a section of lowland. .-- ;','; :t ..t-- . , -v TO VACATE GBAJCDSTAKD I ; The Spacious - grandstand " which has echoed and reechoed to the ' shouts of thousands of race enthusiasts cheering on their favorite in the race is now be ing utilised as a factory office harboring S50 office employes. Upon completion of the new offices the grandstand will be vacated and removed to the new' Good year athletic field, where It will be re modeled and continue its mission of seat ing thousands of sport enthusiasts, for the Goodyear athletio program is an ex tensive one and includes every known branch of healthful exercise and pleas ureable recreation.- -.. The removal of this old land mark to its new location, a half mile distant. Is a gigantic task, but as a part of the great Goodyear scheme at Los Angeles it transfer becomes only an incident in the -establishment' of its western headquarters. Congressman Esch Says Trucks Will, Handle Short Hauls Much of the "short haul- will shift to the newcomer in the transportation field the motor truck- ss highway construc tion becomes of such character as to make highway rate making practical. This was the view expressed by Con gressman Keen, chairman of the inter state and foreign commerce, commit tee, and . author of the railroad bill. in . speaking at a highway transporta tion conference in Washington. The change will be to the economic advantage) of the railway and the gen eral public as . well, he added.
