SPEED RECORD IS
ACCOMPLISHED
BY REPAIR BARGE
- Speed records for machinery re
pairs was set by the pacific Marine
Repair Barge In completing the work
on the steamship Pawlet. : Engine
room repair work was contracted for
by C. F. Machen, manager, for 1 10,
000 with a proviso of 11250 per day
demurrage and the same amount of
bonus and the: contract set for eight
days." The work was completed in
six days (two of which were holi
days). : ; ;:-:: ;) ,-;. '
Part cargo of the Fawlet was to be
taken at Wtuna. Original plans were
for a tow down and return. . She went
down the river under her own steam
and returned the same way. The "sea
going" machine shop was "towed to
Wauna. A crew of 60 men: was set
to work and without the loss of a single
hour in loading, the craft left, returned
to Portland, passed inspection and will
be ready for sea tonight. , -
Charles Machen, for many years man-a-er
and owner of the Vulcan Iron
Works, conceived the idea of a float
ing repair shop. He put his idea to
practical use and speed work on the
Pawlet is the first result of his ef
forts. The barge is equipped with the
latest machinery, electric welding -and
cutting outfits ana all modern labor
- saving devices. Portland has et a rec
ord for coast ports in the matter of
fast repairs. - ,:
The Pawlet Is lumber-laden for Japan
and will get away tonight. She is tak
ing 4000 barrels of fuel oil from the
steamship Olen and will finish with 2000
at the tanks of the Union Oil company
this afternoon." '.-. -;-. .v
