D
EAK" JONES labored with
Wednesday contest,- but wretched support rave the Bees a victory.
The Beavers foozled chance after chance Kingdon pulling three boots,
two of which were wild throws and the other with a made-to-order double
play in sight. Klngdon's throwing from the shortfield was weak all -day.
Jones was touched up for a dozen bingles, - but some of them were
of the scratchy, variety, -Sheely getting a double inthe first Inning that
'counted two runs on what should have been an out. Ernie Johnson made
five hits in six times up. v " - .-' :v- ;
"Biff" Schaller -Ruthed" one at the
tart of the sixth Inning which tied the
'Count, but Sheely came back and dropped
one into the left field bleacher in the
next inning. Two more runs followed
this aa 'the result of an error by Blue,
who dropped a throw fxorn- Kingdon that
would have Tetlred the Bees. -STROTJJ
IJrTRODCCED
Bromley started -for the Bees, but was
chased to the -j- clubhouse by Manager
Johnson following an argument over
feeding a fat one to Koehler in the fourth
: after the Beaver catcher had two strikes
on htm. Stroud finished the game and
- received credit for the victory.
' Johnson's scratch hit to Jones, Krug's
walk and Sheely's fly to center, which
Maisel dropped after trying to make a
ci reus jatch, gave the- Bees two In - the
first. Mulligan's single, .Sand's : sacri
fice and Klngdon's heave to first rang
v the bell for Salt Lake in the fourth.
- For Uand. came back with two in this
Inning. Schaller singled to right field,
and Cox drew a walk. Koehler singled
to center, scoring Schaller. Kingdon. hit'
to Krug:, who made a bad throw to John
eon, Cox scoring and Koehler and King
don advancing to second and -third re
spectively. -Jones hit to Johnson and
"ICoehler was nabbed at the plate. : The
Inning was ended with a fly to Maggert.
BES FOBGE AHEAD -
In the sixth, after fouling 'eteen balls,
Schaller- slammed the ball over the right
field fence. It cleared the wall by 10
feet, but Sheely put- the Bees in the lead
with a swat into the bleachers. The next-
two . men were - retired, : when : Blue
dropped a throw, which gave Jenkins a
base. Stroud followed with a single and
. when Maggert singled to center, Jenkins
' scored and Stroud - came in on Cox's
rapid return. -j-. .
J Bheely's hit past third. Slglin's boot,
a fielder's choice, and a balk gave the
Bees their seventh run in the eighth.

Benjamin
Is Known
As Beauty
T By Boa
Joe Benjamin is taking a desperate
chance in meeting- Eddie Shannon, the
ferocious Irish lightweight 'who likes to
spoil pretty faces. In fact, Benjamin is
taking two chances one of losing his
fast rising, reputation as an aspirant for
the lightweight crown, and the other: as
being the handsomest prize fighter in
the ring. : - Y --.
So far, Benjamin's Adonis-like physi
ognomy doesn't, bear any of the marks
which are- incident to years' of ring
work, although Benjamin has been fight
ing fie years' or more. The cauliflower
ear, the - broken nose, the ; disfigured
hands and the false teeth are not among
the Benjamin repertoire" at present.
IS A PBOCD BOT
- Joe is rather -proud, thougn somewhat
bashful, of his predominating beauty.
Nevertheless, it has caused him many
embarrassing moments at times when
wealthy dowagers and lovelorn girls
have attempted to thrust their attentions
upon him. In New York especially was
Joe beset by numerous designing mem
bers of the ungentle sex.
Benjamin's prepossessing appearance
brought him as much fame In New York
as did his boxing ability, probably more.
On Broadway he was referred to as "the
answer to a maiden's prayer.' .. One time
la front of a Gotham- theatre he caused
a near riot when a bevy of matinee
strrck girls mistook him for Francis "X.
Bushman and beleaguered him to give
them just one -Word.
SHE'LL WAIT!
Despite the publicity which has been
given him, Benjamin is a modest boy 'and
would rather fight than be embarrassed
by the love-making of many women. He
runs from the latter whenever the open
ing is clear and his invariable9 rule for
bids him to answer one of the many love
letters which the -daily mail brings him.
But Benjamin isnvt a . woman hater.
If a person corners him and talks seri
ously .to .him, the cockles of his heart
warm up and he partially unbosoms him
Eelf as he sighs softly about a little girl
in New York and a fireplace and a home
of his own and a lot of things that go
witl it. - '
"But she's got to wait until I'm
tnrough fighting or am champion of the
world," says Joe. '

DAVIS WINS BATTLE
FROM THE SHATTUCK
BALL TOSSERS, 8-2
DAVIS and Shattuck school teams met
in the final game of the champion
ship round , of the Portland Grammar
School Baseball league Wednesday aft
ernoon on the Jefferson : high school
grounds, the champions of the west side
trimming Shattuck by an I to 2 swore.
From the time Walter Red" : Brown
doubled In ,the ' first inning scoring
"Skeef Story and Xefty" Gaodwln the
Davis contingent, kept plugging away for
a victory. ' . -: - . - . '
The playing of Frank Heissenreter In
left field for Davis was the ; fielding
feature of the matinee, the little fellow
grabbing four difficult flies. He was at
bat four times, drawing walks on three
occasions. "Tab" Munsey and Charley
Shirley played a clean game 'for the
losers but that can't be said of two or
three others on the Shattuck team. In
the final inning , with two out,, Abie
Jacobson struck out, -the third 'strike
being called and he Immediately pro
ceeded to "clean" the umpire. His ac
tions throughout the Contest, it' is said,
were far from being what should be ex
pected from a grammar school athlete
and the game ,-against Davis was not his
first appearance. - . ,
Arleta and Shaver schools will meet
this afternon on the Columbia Park dia
mond and , it will be the second time
the two squads have met, the first
clash ending 12 to 12. Arleta is leading
the circuit with five wins and one de
feat,, and Shaver has three wins and
two setbacks,- while Woodmere and
Davis now are tied for second honors.
The twoi squads met last month on the
east side, Davis winning 3 to 1. Should
Arleta win today, - the Woodmere
Davis playoff will be staged-early next
week, probably , Tuesday, oh the west
side on Multnomah field or the Twenty
fourth and Vaughn street grounds. 1
