the statistics compiled by Deputy
Collector- Karinen, of the revenue
service the caaco lumber shipments
from the Columbia river during the
month of Slay were the largest tor
any single month In several yearsV s ;
The ' records show that 32 vessels
loaded at ." the j. niill In the lower river
district and their combined . cargoes
totalled 27,933.643 feet, of lumber. Twenty-six
of those vessels, carrying 21.41J.
SOS feet, went to Calitomta points, while
six vessels laden with 6,520,643 feet are
en route to foreign ports.' ,.
In the same period the upriver mills
Shipped 4,580,000 feet to California by
water and 28,777,488 feet to foreign
points, making a grand total of 60,291,-J

month of May.
During the same month 77.061 barrels

Astoria . terminals and the receipts at
the custom bouse for - tonnage; taxes,

the Eugene board of education has called
a special election for June 21 on a pro
posed increase In the annual school levy

The teachers' salaries alone wilt call for
6119.580. while more than $17,000 will be
required for principal and interest of

Women; Beats One
: Almost Unconscious
Roseburg, June 2. Mrs. Gibson Ham
ilton v of Reuben, a small town near
Glendale, 'was attacked - late' Saturday
afternoon by a man, "who, the compan
ions of Mrs. Hamilton say. was seated
by the side of the road. Mrs. Hamilton
and Mrs. Baker and her daughter were
picking flowers. The man. believed to
be insane, attacked the women. Grab
bing . Mrs. Hamilton, he beat her into
semi-consciousness, and : "threatened to
kill Miss Baker If she Interfered. .
! Mrs. Baker ran . for assistance. . A
posse was formed and a thorough search
of the hills, was made but no trace of
the man was found.'. Mrs. Hamilton was
taken to her home in a dazed condition,

Fleming, who was driving the car. was
on a motor" trip to Sisters. Grease on
the barrel' caused the gun to slip from
his hand.' Fleming, continued at the
wheel until Sisters was ' reached, a dis
