A LL THE way to school Peter Rabbit
J. wondered who he . and the others
would "learn about that day. - He was so
busy wondering that he became heedless.
Peter Is Japt to be heedless at times.
He was so busy thinking and wondering
that he forgot to watch his steps. The
result was that, as he hopped out of a
bramble-tangle Just ; within the Green
Forest, h was all but landed ia some
thing worse than the worst brambles
that ever grew. It was only by a wild
jump to one side that he salved himself.
Peter had almost landed right in among
the thousand little apears -of Prickly
Porky the Porcupine ! ' r 4
"Gracicms V exclaimed Peter, that
was a - narrow i escape. . 'What are you
doing1 'way over here,- you prickly old
slow-poke?" ' ' "f -
"Why don't you look where you are
going r' grunted Prickly Porky; It was
plain that he was rather peevish. I "It
wouldn't be my fault if you had a few
of my little spears sticking to you this
very minute. It would serve you right
Yes,-air, it would serve you right. It is
a great pity, a fellow cannot walk along
minding his own business without dan

heedless harum-scarum chaps like you.
He waddled along; a few steps and

Petert pricked up his long earaw "I

You are a Rodent,' and it must be that
we are going to learn all about you this
morning." ' - V . 5 - -; -:
. "I am not a Rodent ; I'm a Porcupine,"
grunted Prickly Porky indignantly.
"Toiit.i Rodent just the same," re
torted Peter, 'glad of a chance to air his

Diversion
NOVELTY with a big N characterizes
the bill at Pantages this week.
Many: of the acts are absolutely new,
others have clever new features and the
tumbling act. without which' no vaude
ville program is complete, is so daring
and so well done that it is received with
spontaneous applause. '
' In Howard and Helen Savage "At the
Country Club.? the audience is given
a thrill by some crack shooting of a
most : unusual character.- Ruoker and
Wlnfred. one a "chink" and one a col
ored rgent," delighted everyone with
their dialogue, songs and dances. They
j answered no . less than half a dozen
curtain calls with bland tmiles. but
positive shakes of the head.
"Fifty-Fifty" to the title or a merry
little sketch of song, patter and dance
given j by Lowry and Prince," - all of
which' is highly entertaining, although
the climax of fun comes in Lowry's
character song of mamma's naughty
boy, who. on going to New York, learned
to smoke cubebs. drink coca cola and
stay up until 10.
"You'd Be Surprised", with f Billy
Zeck, Gladys Randolph and Jack O'M al
ley. In a little one act playlet of clever
lines and situations, kept the audience
in gales of laughter. This act , intro
duces attractive scenery and a bevy of
smartly gowned, pretty frirls, thei whole
making up a delightful pit of ! enter
tainment. '- ' N . I-
Laurie Of d way, as the bride left wait-

way into the .heart of the audience with
some of the Mitzi Hajos trick. The
four- acrobats did remarkable work in
the air, on bars and on mat, which won
tjje approval of the audience, which was
a typically holiday one in size, "stand
ing; room only" being at a premium.

- "Several thousand dollars ' have been
spent to make , the Columbia Beach
amusement park more attractive than
ever," said Joseph M, Reig, manager of
that summer resort.- in speaking of the
many improvements Just completed or
under way. . .
"The beach now ready for the 1920
season.'' has a new concrete ' roadway
throughout its length and new concreta
walks combing the resort.
, "A large crew of men has been em
ployed for several weeks at the park
in connection with the clean-up, paint
up and spruce-up movement inaugurated
to welcome the Shrlners to a spotless
city," Reig says." . -
"Rows of trees have-been ' planted
along the beach to provide shady loung
ing spots and 100 or so bird houses and
nests, built by the pupils of the High
land school, have been installed. Animal
houses are being built for the 'American

What is this school anyway? Don't want
to go to schooL Know all I want to
know.; Know how to get all I want to
eat and. how to make everybody get out
of my fay and leave me alone, and
that's enough to know." He rattled the
thousand little spears hidden la bis coat
"Wliat are you dolus; way over here,
' you frickly old slowpoke?"
and Peter shivered at the sound. It was
a most unpleasant sound.
"Well, some folks do like to be stupid,"
snapped Peter.''"I wouldn't be as 'fctupid
as you ara- for anything in the -world.
Folks who don't want to learn ought to
be made to learn. I guess it is a good
thing Old Mother Nature sent for you.
You'll have to learn somethina; now
whether you want to or not."
"With this Peter hurried on Ilpperty-lipperty-lip,
leaving Prickly Porky - to
slowly shuffle and : rattle and grunt
along; behind. All the others were there
when Peter -arrived. Prickly i Porky
wasn't even in sight. Old Mother Na

do to waste even a minute. She called
