Robinson of St. Helens, who offer the above advice' following an eventful trip Into the Wilson river $dlstrict last week end In a W20 Hupmobile. r En route to their favorite fishing rendezvous the St. Helens sportsmen drove through Portland, Forest Grove, Galea City and West Timber. In going over the mountains toward Wilson river their Hup was obliged to twist itself around no less Uhan II hairpin curves on a nine mile stretch of road that in volved some low gear pulling on ac count of the heavy grade and the ex tremely rough surface. In fact, the turns were so short In some places that both rear fenders on the Hup were rather badly Jammed. Some of the ruts were 18 inches deep by actual measurement and despite the fact that there were no tire chains aboard, the car managed somehow or ether to force its way through several Inches of absolute mud. As If to furnish a climax to the diffi culties of the Saturday ride rain came down In liberal quantities before the return march on Sunday and as a conse quence it waa necessary to hitch a couple of horses to the car in order to pull it through the deep, sticky mud on the summit of the mountains, where the wet, sticky clay was 10 inches thick in places. In making the descent over the nine miles of steep grade the fisherman motorists were obliged to hook' two trees eight inches wide and 20 feet long on the rear of the Hup and put one passen ger on each of the tree. This Beeoea) finds the; paving again, although the road by Columbia City cannot be said to be very rough going, and one really feels slightly put out at noi being able to show dexterity of band when the paving is once more felt beneath the wheels of the car. ' . From Deer Island past Goble and on to Rainier the paving provides excellent going, stopping somewhat abruptly at the end of the long fill through the lat ter town. Here the machine is turned up the hill and a bridge of rather rickety character Is traversed on a stretch of road of questionable smooth ness.! Bainier itself cannot boast 'much paving, and it is not until the sub urbs : on the far side of, the town are reached that hard surface once more' be gins.!. CAW "TAKE IIFE EAST From here on mile after mile the car may sing whatever song it pleases, the driver can take life easy, and the rear seat denizens may set their minds at rest about hard bumps. The hills, covered in places with, scarred) and charred stumps, flash by. the road dips and turns, loops and twists, climbs . and - de scends, now along the shoulder of a hill and around a -steep bend, now down a grade along the banks of some fishing stream .where the traveler may discern, far below him, the form of a fisherman, partially Immersed In water and wholly immersed in thought regarding the fish in. the stream and the contents of his creel. One chap scarcely made a motion daring the . period of five minutes the scout party observed him. Intent, no doubt, upon having the fish at the end of his line at any cost. - The river tumbles ' companlonably alongside for some miles, and at one place where a bridge spans the water on below, a tiny but peppy falls invites the tourist to haul forth his camera and "shoot" a couple of films. And so 'on down the hills rolls the car and then in a blaze of glory the road hurls its torrent of travel into the rich lands of Tye valley; and Clatskanie is seen In the distance. Near Clatskanie the road becomes : rough, the paving ends and signs of construction are here and there. Two gangs of men are said to be at work at this point, laying the "hot stuff or making grade in preparation for it. - : BOUGH nr PLACES From Clatskanie on to the Astoria highway the road is rough In places, but at all points permits easy and fairly fast travel. . Four gangs of men are busy on this stretch getting ready for paving, and In some places laying the hard surface itself. It Is said by con tractors that .' the Clatskanie-Astoria stretch will be changed - from a semi- country road to an excellent driveway. A steady pace of from 15 to 20 miles an hour may be maintained right through the places where construction' is going on and at other points on the last bits ef unpaved highway. Stages are making the trip dally and are encountering no difficulty in maintaining a rapid sched ule at all points. A short distance this Side of Astoria hard surface Is once more in evidence, and the few miles t town are soon covered. OVER-SPEEDING DANGEROUS TO LIFE OE TRUCK When, the1 man on the road sees a bg truck or small truck approach ing; hint at a rapid rate of speed, he is immediately disposed to stop and watch, the commercial carrier race by, .It is a s pretty sight to behold the heavily, weighted machine con ducting -an Imaginary race against time,, and . the observer usually ac cords the driver - a moment's, admi ration for his skill at the wheel. As a matter of fact, if the observer were the owner of the truck, the head, ay, of a big transportation company, he would not be so' well pleased as the man who does not have to pay the truck's operating expenses. Overs Deed ing is one of the most dangerous fac tors governing the1 life ef a truck. -: Overspeeding Is not only dangerous to others, but like overloading, is a factor which greatly lessens the normal lift of your truck. Most trucks are equipped with governors to prevent 'excessive driv ing speeds. It is just as essential to keep down the speed in coasting. A. heavy truck in motion represents a tremendous amount of energy whose de structiveneu increases at a much greater ratio than the Increase in speed. It therefore requires much more effort to control and it can do untold damage should it get beyond the driver's control. Xhccessive speed causes exoesslve wear. The driving shafts are designed to run at certain speeds below their critical or bending speeds.
