May 27. TJ. P. The; New Tork Evening Bun financial review today said: . Today's stock market was much like yester day's session strong, but dulL Indeed, trading was too thin to permit of th advance of several points in the price list being in any sens Inter preted as indicative of real buying power, f The supply of stocks was very limited. ' Most of the railroad shares were moderately ia demand, and. with the exception of one or two issues, Atchison, for instance, gained a fraction to a point or so. In midseason word cam from Ssa Francisco that $20,000,000 in gold had been received there for account of the Morgana. The intelligence was a bullish factor and tended to push short to more argent covering. In this phase United States Steel crossed 94 for tha first time in the session, and Crucible ran up through 136 to a gain of 4 points or so tor the day and some 11 or 12 points from Tuesday. Liberty bonds were strong. Money conditions continued relatively easy. Call loans again renewed mod ruled at 6 per cent without much perceptible increase in tha quest for accommodation. Offerings of time funds were made it IK per cent. Slight concession. New Tork, May 27. (TJ. P.) Reaction following the brisk trading which has featured the stock market during the last few days was. evidenced in the small volume of transactions at today's open ing, resulting in an irregular price trend, with the tendency toward lower levels. What interest there Was centered in oil and equipments. American Locomotive opened up H . Beading off H , Bethlehem B off H, Pan-American np s. Crucible off H. Mexican petroleum np H. Baldwin unchanged, American "Woolen off 2, Studebaker unchanged, U. S. Steel eft H . Gen eral Motors up H . Texas company off 1 H . Sin clair off H. ' The market showed little distinct trend in the first half hour but at the end of that period substantial buying orders made their appearance and oils and equipments . moved forward. Amer ican Locomotive advanced to 97. Those who sold American Woolen short at the opening be cause of the indictments handed down by the federal grand jury after the close yesterday did not profit during early trading. Wtyle opfaing at 95 H. off 2. the stock quickly recovered the toss. ... . Shorts in Crucible had another bad time of it when the stock was rushed up to 185 H. The offices of J. P. Morgan as Co. announced that they have .received gold amounting to 820,000,000 at San Francisco from Hongkong for the account of the British government. It ia believed, this shipment will be sold to tha New Tork Federal Reserve bank, aa waa the ease with previous shipments from the British empire. The market closed irregular. Some of the traders took their profits oa the long side in the last half hour. , but the recessions were mainly fractional. Corn products became active, however, with advancing prices, and sales were recorded above 95. Tobacco stocks were also in demand. United Retail Stores got above 75. A much bet ter tone prevailed in Wall street Wednesday, although" the market closed materially under the ? best prices and with net losses in numer ous issues. In the trtorning Crucible Steel, Pan-American and Sinclair were the leaders, all rising sharply. There was a reaction about midday but a secondary advance in the after noon carried Crucible up again until it was up seven points over its low figure for the day. On this movement Consolidated Gas advanced more than three points. Sugar stocks were irregu lar all day. Foreign exchanges were stronger, marks rising to 3.15 cents. There was no news to account for the reaction in the market that marked the close and it looked like profit tak ing for the account of small traders. The undertone was. strong throughout the session. ; Some of the most Influential traders of the street are working on the con structive side of the market. Bankers are also much more optimistic and there is much talk among railroad men of a speedy end of the freight congestion. Those who pay attention to politics are much pleased at the statement made by Senator Johnson in regard to stock dividends. Johnson has been feared by Wall street as being too radical. He had - been gaining strength up to the time he made his stock dividend state ment. In that statement he denounced the supreme court indirectly and the corporations directly as having defraud ed the government. Wall Btreet be lieves that in making this statement Senator Johnson removed himself as a presidential possibility. Corrected daily by foreign exchange department of the United States National bank.
