THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL CROSSATERN NST FIGHTING RUSSIANS 111 POLAR REGIONS ' Out . Crossa doesn't care much about ' fighting Bolshevik In the frozen north. He doesn't like nine months of darkness, doesn't relish winters In block houses, and isn't crazy about British bully ' beef and hardtack. He doesn't care about daily skirmishes with ' mosquitoes and would rather walk with shoes than In nine pairs of sox. Crossa is a Portland boy. He is the on of Mr. and Mrs. C. F.- Crossa of 290 Stanton street. He left his parents, bow- ever, a few years ago for employment in Detroit And he left Detroit in Sep tember, 1917, as a member of the Ameri can army, to eventually land In 'Russia among the Bolsheviks. There he had to endure, as well as the Bolshevik!, the darkness, block houses, hardtack and bully beef. . , CLOTHES ENOUGH 05 HA3fD a joined the army to fight the Ger mans," is the way he puts It." and came out fighting Bolsheviks. And between you and me, I would rather be in Amer ica," he smiled. : After a period of training In the United States, Crossa was sent to Eng- " land with the 339th Infantry, 85th di- - vision, and from there to Archangel. Up the Dvina river his battalion went on - barges, to be mixed with Italian, .Scotch, Frenoh, British and Cossack trops and to spend the winter in block houses. -The houses were built of logs, two tiers K?th sand between serving as walls. Plenty of clothes were supplied, Crossa ways, but the food consisted almost en tirely of stew, tea, bully beef and hard tack, supplied by the British govern ment. The British were in charge of the operations. - STJK OKXY OCCASIONALLY - Food and ammunition was brought to the troops, 350 miles from Archangel, by dog trains during the summer months, Crossa - relates. A train consisted of eight dogs, an Eskimo driver and sled. The White sea was blocked 'by ice In the winter, and ships were forced to land at Kola, on the Mur man coast, with sup plies. From there they were transported 400 miles to Archangel by reindeer, train, one reindeer to a sled, and to the troops by dog train from Archangel. Six hun dred British troops were brought in on one occasion, , Crossa says, by reindeer train, four or five men to a sled. . L. s I " "Nine months of the year you never see the sun in that country," is the Statement of Crossa. "You can't read a paper. The other three months, June, July and August, it is daylight all but about an hour a day. During that time the mosquitoes are fierce." PEOPLE ARE STARTING Crossa's contingent was driven from its base at Shenkurask In January, 1919. During that, month the Bolshevik! started a drive with Archangel as the objective. At 1 o'clock in the morning the order came to move and to abandon everything. Without razor or rations the retreat began. Even shoes were abandoned. They were heavy and slip pery. The men wore nine pairs of heavy socks on the 48-hour march that followed. - . After their departure the Bolsheviks shelled Shenkurask for seven hours, en tered and found the place deserted, and went in pursuit of the fleeing allies. Forty-five miles away, the mixed troops made a stand, with logs thrown up as breastworks. They cut a small band of Bolsheviks to pieces with rifle fire. - A short time after Crossa left Arch angel for the United States and was discharged at Camp Custer, Mich. He returned to Portland and will remain here if employment is forthcoming. Crossa brings word that Russian peas ants in the neighborhood of Archangel are on the point of starvation. Blaze on Peninsula Indicates Need of Additional Fireboats "The disastrous fire of last Sunday emphasizes the fact that Portland needs more fire boats," said Mayor Baker Monday. "I believe that it would be money well invested to have four fire boats. .One should be kept in the St, Johns district; another at the upper harbor and the third in the center of the waterfront district, while the fourth should be at hand as an auxiliary when any of the others were disabled. "Portland is bidding for new indus tries,, and the question of adequate fire protection.. is one that is sure, to be given much consideration by any concern in vestigating the possibilities here." Blame Is Laid on Men in Car; Jury Urges Watchman ' . Ontralia. Wash.. May 25. The death f William D. Ziegler. fatally hurt when an automobile in which he and Charles Honey were driving was struck by a light engine on the Pacific highway crossing in the south end of the city Monday, was due to carelessness of Roney, the driver, and Ziegler in not noting the signals at the crossing, was the verdict of the coroner's Jury. The Jury .recommended that a. permanent watcnman be stationed at the crossing. -Roney testified he was driving slowly and saw or heard no signals. Engineer Harry Swart wood testified Roney was driving close to 40 miles an hour and ap parently paid no attention to the cross ing bell or to his whistle signals. . Astoria Gymnasium ... Is to Cost $54,562 Astoria, May 25. Bids were opened by the building committee of the board of school directors Monday on erecting the ' proposed new gymnasium at the high school. The lowest bids received on the construction and heating and plumbing show the structure will cost S54.562, aside from the equipment, which . will oost approximately 110,000. The bids have been taken under advisement. - Man Loses $12,500 On Suit Appealed San Francisco. May 85. U. P.) Not satisfied with a verdict of 313,500 in a breach of contract suit.
