n0 ON MEASURES
fMTHI SEW
CERTAIN WINNER
Amendment to Restore Capital
, Punishment, Which Was at
First in Doubt, 'Seems to Have
Carried; Returns Incomplete.
C. N. McArthur, judging from the
continuing- drift of , the voting as
shown , from the complete : returns
from 175 precincts of the district,
Multnomah county, has won the' Re
publican ; nomination for congress.
Qn the same basis it seems more thin
probable that Dr.. Esther Pohl-Love'Joy
has defeated Mrs. ""Alexander Thompson
for , the Democratic nomination for the
same office, . ' - '
; In the First district W. C. Hawley
has no opposition and Is the? Republican
nominee for that district, while in the
Second district Sinnott is leading Jones
nearly six to one. "
In the ! Republican Multnomah' con-
s-ressional battle McArthur has 6932
votes so far tabulated to his creditv.
while Sweeney has 4903 and Smith 3308,
giving McArthur a lead in the 175 pre
cincts completely counted of 2024..
On the ' Democratic side of the battle
line. Dr. iLovejoy has 2165 votes in ' her
favor as against 1686 cast for Mrs.
Thompson in the 175 precincts Of 1 the
district. This gives Dr. Lovejoy a lead,

ties of the Second congressional district

the Democratic candidate, 8 votes.
Peace Is So Severe
That Abdication of
Sultan May Result
;. )'.. .:: i . , .
Constantinople, Turkey, May 22. As
expected, the peace terms produced deep
depression here. At a meeting in the
sultan's palace it was suggested that in
case the powers did not modify their de
cisions in regard to Thrace and Smyrna
the saltan and the imperial family would
abdicate, leaving the Mussulmans with
out a caliph for the first -time in his
tory. It 1 is hoped to stir up all the
Mussulmans in the' British empire and
thus compel Britain to modify the terms.
Voters in affirmative mood passed
favorably upon all measures of ;the
special state election ballot, Friday,
Judging by the complete count of 175
Multnomah- county precincts and in
complete returns from 26 Oregon
counties outside Multnomah ; county.
Even the doubtfully popular capital
punishment biil shows a majority ' ap
proaching 3000, and the majority in
favor of thjB measure providing for the
successor to an incapacitated governor
has a lead of more than 4000. ;
The vote on the elementary school tax
bill is heaviest as the count progresses,
but the blind school measure continues
to have the largest majority.
There seems to be no further room for
doubt that all the measures have' car
ried. The latest count shows : k
