CHARTERS
Wheat and flour shipments to Eu
rope will be increased during the
month of June by the addition of the
steamships West Wind and El Cajon.
These steamships have been taken
by private charter and New York
advices state they have been aa
eigned to E. C. Evans. & Co., for
Portland loading. Both vessels are
now en route to the Columbia river.
The West Wind is scheduled to ar
rive June 2 and the EI Cajon May 26.
June and July movement of grain
will be heavy. In all. 17 steamships
are booked for Northwest loading with
a carrying capacity of., better than
3,000.000 bushels (including flour).
J'oeted on the board at the Merchants
Exchange are the Ethingham, Dewey
and Bakersfield. .
The Columbia-Pacific Steamship com
pany announces the steamships Eastern
Ocean, West Cayote and Howerden for
July loading.. The Eastern Ocean is on
berth on the Atlantic side "and will sail
early In June for Portland. The Ho
warden will follow from Baltimore the
-middle of the month, and the West
Cayote from New York the latter part
of the-, month. The vessels are under
charter' to ' the European Steamship
company.
Arriving in the harbor thiB morning
was the steamship Kastern Cloud, to
W. IV Grace & Co. She berthed at the
Standard Oil dockt for fuel and will
load 80,000 barrels of flour at Munici
pal No. 4.
A number of steamships have been
allotted to private charter whose names
have not been announced by local
agents. Listing of all grain, vessels for
Northwest ports will probably be made
during the first week in June.
SHIPWRECKED JAPANESE TO
BE RETURNED TO ORIENT
The 13 Japanese shipwrecked fisher
men, rescued 300 .miles off the Japanese
coast by - the steamer Paulette, which
was Portland-bound, swill be returned
to their native country on the Kaisho
Maru Saturday as a result of arrange
ments just completed between the im
migration service, the Japanese consul
and the Pacific Steamship company.
The Japanese had been shipwrecked
five days before being picked up by the
Paulette one dark night. The Paulette
is now being fitted up with coal bunkers
so there is not room for the Japanese
on board. Furthermore, the vessel will
be iiereifor some time, so that officials
deemed it advisable to arrange for trans
portation back on some other vessel.
PORTLAND-ASTORIA STEAMER
SERVICE IS REESTABLISHED
Dally service between Portland and
Astoria has been reestablished by the
O-W. 11. & N. company. The steamer
Harvest Queen will sail from Ains
worth dock every evening except Sat
urday. - '
Opening of the excursion season for
North Beach points has been announced
for the latter part of June when th
steamer Haaealo wiU.be placed on the
run. giving a two-boat service out of
Portland and Megler,
TUG RELIEF AND TOW ARE

Speed record for a heavy tow was
established by the tug Relief on the
first leg of. the long voyage to the
West. Coast with the lumber-laden
barge Acapulco. The tug reported- in

STRS. HARVARD. AND VALE
TO SAIL FOR COAST SOON
Los Angeles. May 31. (I. N." S.) An
nouncement was made today that the
steamers Harvard and Yale, formerly in
the coastwise service between San Diego.
Los Angeles and San Francisco, would
be started for the Pacific coast from
the Philadelphia navy yard in about
three weeks. The. steamers were bought
from the government recently by the
Los Angeles-Pacific Navigation company.
Tom McFarland, formerly captain of
the Yale, recently a trial captain for
the Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Drydock
company, left yesterday for Philadelphia
to take charge of bringing the steamers
to the west coast. He will again become
captain of the Yale. Herman. Grothraan,
resident inspector at San Pedro for the
Emergency; Fleet corporation, will be
chief engineer of the Yale. He will start
for Philadelphia Sunday.
When the two , steamers reach Los
Angeles harbor they will be practically
reconstructed at the plant of the- Los
Angeles Shipbuilding & Drydock: com
pany. Radio Examinations Scheduled
Radio examinations will be held about
June 15 by the radio examiner of the
seventh district in the radio department
of the Oregon Institute of Technology,
fourth floor of the Y. M. C." A. building.
Those desiring to take the examination
at this time are requested to leave their

Steamer Silverado Inspected
Under direction of ' Local Inspectors
Edwards and Wynn, the steamship Sil
verado was- given part inspection at
Rainier. She will be finished at Port
land tomorrow. The Green - Star liner
Aquarius was inspected at Vancouver,
and thet-Wenina at Portland today. The
Port of Portland tug Pronto will be in
spected at Portland Saturday.

Tug Hercules Safe
. Seattle, May 21. (U. P.) The tug
Hercules, towing a pontoon of drydock
to San Francisco, reported In danger off
Cape Flattery last night, . was -all safe
today, according to a wireless from the

The steamer Daisy Freeman, with
general cargo from San Francisco, is
dw at Portland- Sunday.
The British motorship Malahat shifted
this morning from Westport with lum
ber to Astoria, where she will complete
her crew before sailing for Adelaide.
With passengers and freight for San
Francisco and San Pedro, the steamer
Willamette is scheduled to sail from St
Helens this afternoon at 5 o'clock.
The Japanese steamship Kaisha Maru

Investigating Case
Thefts of Jewelry -figured In' two of
three housebreaking cases reported to
the police the last 24 hours.
Someone - entered the rooms of Mrs.
W. II. Williams in the Peninsula apart
ments Thursday night and stole a
pearl and sapphire ring, .four blue
sapphires, - one square cameo brooch,
one silver ring (set), a wrist watch,
lavalliere and other jewelry. Inspectors
Schulpius and J. Moloney are working
on the case.
A pass key was used In effecting an
entrance to the rooms occupied .by Mrs.
J. E. Dempsey in the Jackson apart
ments Thursday night. , A diamond and
agate ring and beads were taken. : -Inspectors
Phillips and Tackabery were
detailed on the case.
Officer Payne reported that two men
broke the front door lock early this
morning of the Everready drug store
at East Fortieth and Division streets.
C. C. Banfield, the proprietor, reported

175 to Be Graduated
From Eighth Grade
Of County Schools
Nearly 175 children are -to be gradu
ated from the eighth grade in the Mult
nomah county rural schools Saturday
morning when commencement exercises
will be held in Library hall. B. G. Skula-
son. a Portland attorney, will deliver the
commencement address. Hopkln Jenkins,
principal of Jefferson high school will
award the diplomas. .
Music will be furnished by the Park
rose school orchestra, and drills, songs
and recitations will be given by various
schools in the county. Prizes will be
given in the essay and tablet contests
and library reading certificates and
standard certificates will be given out.
Reading certificates win be given to 135
pupils who have given a satisfactory oral
report on five books chosen from a se
lected list prepared by the library.
Zigzag Road to Be
Ready in Two Weeks
The Zigzag road, will be complete in
another week, T. II. Sherrard, super
visor of the Oregon- National forest,
said this morning after a visit to the
region. No attempts will be made
toward the development of camping
grounds this year except the building of
two stoves, because of lack of funds.
Reed Students Merge Taxes
Student activities at. Reed college will
be financed by a blanket tax of S5, ac
cording to a decree of the Reed student
council. The tax will cover the subscrip
tivities, athletics and' miscellaneous- stu
dent expenditures- In the past the
taxes have been collected by treasurers
for the various organizations. Next
year they will be consolidated in one in
clusive tax, to be. collected on registra
tion day.
