The steamer Northwestern was built
at Seattle in 1914 and has a depth of
five feet eight inches; It will have an
up-river capacity of 100 tons and a
down-stream capacity of ISO tons. Both
freight and passenger accommodations
will be arranged.
The vessel will leave municipal dock
No. 2 every Thursday evening" at ,7
o'clock and dock at Lewistoa, Uma
tilla. Hermlston, Stanfield, Echo and
Columbia river points east of CeliJo,
Returning, the vessel will leave Lew
iston every Monday evening.
Jobbers and manufacturers who have
been anxious ,for the establishment of
an upper Columbia river service are

EXHIBIT OF COAST TRADE
San' Francisco, May 20. indorsed by
the various Chambers of Commerce and
foreign trades bodies of the Pacific
coast, a petition is oh its y to Wash
ington today to Secretary of Commerce
Alexander and Admiral Benson, head
of. the chipping board, for the assign
ment -of the training ship Iris as a
floating trade exhibit. .
The plans suggested by the commer
cial bodies is to have the Iris allocated
to the Columbia-Pacific Shipping com
pany of Portland for a period of seven
months. The vessel Is to be filled with
Pacific coast products and sent to every
port in Asia between Vladivostok and
Calcutta. After visiting these ports it

Under charter to Williams, Diamond &
Co. the steamship Dewey is due, to ar

Durand was carried down with the
ruins that swept Frank S. Myers out of
the postmastership, following the inves
tigation of postof flee inspectors. ', Du-
rand's resignation was accepted over the
protest of hundreds of Portland people.

For a number of years Durand was
postof f ice inspector in the Portland Jis
trict. When he left the postof f ice ; the
internal revenue department immediate
ly offered him .the post of special in
vestigator in the incorjje tax bureau, at
a compensation larger than he had re
ceived as assistant postmaster.

as this city has been his home for years.

In Lumber Industry
Effects os the car shortage ' on the
lumber industry in Oregon furnished the
principal topic of discussion at the an
nual meeting of the Willamette -Valley
Lumber Manufacturers'; association
Wednesday afternoou at the Portland
hotel. " An unsually heavy export trade
during the 'last few months has relieved
the congestion of stocks at mill yards,
it; was reported, and saved operators
from actual loss due . to the inadequate
rail equipment. -
