The Pierre Antonine In an old -trader
in Portland and during the days of the
French bounty act made frequent trips
to this port.
S. S. ROSE CITY II 10 PORTED
SOLD TO ADMIRAL LINE
Passenger and freight service between
Portland and San Francisco will prob
ably be restored to a pre-war condi
tion in the near future. Sale of the
steamship Rose City to the Admiral line
Is reported on the waterfront and the
changing of the steamships President
' and Oovernor from the Seattle run to
Portland as a terminal is contemplated.
During the past four years l'ortiand
M been struggling along with the Hose
.?-.City, out every 10 days; the City of To
peka, sailing once a fortnight, and
steamers of the McCormick line at ir
regular intervals. The steamship Bear
was lost on Cape Mendocino June 15,
1916. After the outbreak of the war the
sister ship. Beaver, was commandeered
by the government. The Northern Pa
cific and the Great Northern, operating
from Flavel, were drafted into the
transport service and Portland was left
. with the old Hose City and haphazard
-sailings of me steam schooners.
Passenger business between California
ports and Portland is now at the top
and frequent sailings will further stim
ulate, travel by water.

Is owned by Captains Haskins and Rey
nolds and the Balfour, Guthrie company,
and will load lflmber for the West Coast.

W. R. Grace & Co.. will dispatch 7000
tons of flour to the Atlantic seaboard on
the steamship Eastern Cloud, due off
the river . this afternoon from Puget
Sound. The Eastern Cloud is a shipping
board vessel and was built in Japan-.
She is commanded by Captain J. E.
Brinker, a well known navigator on the
Pacific coast. Announcement of the dls-
patching of the Eastern Cloud from
Portland increases the amount of ton

ieson as master of he steamer Klamath.

With passenprers and freight for San
Francisco the steamship Rose City nailed
at 10 o'clock thin morning. She carried
a full cargo of 250 passengers.
The steamer Willamette of the Mc
Cormick fleet is loading lumber at the
St. Helens mills. She is due to sail on
Friday with passengers and freight.

pionship Tuesday night when both teams

won 2-1 from Aryness Joy and Florabeil
Ludington, Washington negative.
Oregon negative. Ethel Wakefield,
Long Beach, Cal., and Jennie Maguire,
Portland, debated at Seattle, winning
the decision 3-0. The question was, "Re

John F. Given, a real estate broker
with office at 512 Gerlinger building,
dropped dead on the sidewalk at North
Ninth and Burnside streets at 6 :30
o'clock this morning. He was identified
by letters and papers in his pockets, but
his residence; address was not given.
Tha body was taken in charge by the

Wage Bonuses Given
By Ladd and Tilton
Edward Cookingham, -president of the
Ladd & THton -bank, announced to the
employes of the Bank Tuesday afternoon
that the board of directors had granted
a 5 per cent bonus of annual salaries
to all who had been in the service of
Oie bank for at least one year and a
propprtionate amount to those who have
been employed ior a shorter period. This
bonus, as well as several j given during
1919. was authorized to offset the in
creased cost of living.

President Carranza has been cap
tured by revolutionists, according to
unconfirmed advices reaching " here
today.
The report was received by radio by
the Oil Weekly here. It said the. cap
ture was effected early today. General
Obregon forwarded passports to Car
ranza and ordered him to leave the
country immediately, the report said.
Gearhart Beach
Hotel Plans Are .
To Be Submitted
Plans for the construction of a tour
ist hotel at Gearhart beach will be pre
sented tq, stockholders; In a corporation
recently organized for ; the purpose at a
meeting in the blue room of the Port
land hotel Friday noon. A' committee
consisting of J. Ci. Ainsworth, Julius L.
Meier! and J. R- Bowles is in charge of
the work and will render a report at the
meeting. Stock to the value of $165,000
already has been sold and it is proposed
to begin building operations when $200,-
000 has been subscribed.
Hard surface paving on the lower Cs
lumbia highway is nearly completed and
after July 1 it will be possible to make
the trip to Seaside by automobile in five
hours, according to Meier. Promoters of
the hotel project believe that tourist pat
ronage from June to October would eas
ily fill the 500 rooms called for in the
architect's plans, r ' . .

First Aid Activity
Ashland, May 19. Merit badges for
first . aid were conferred on two ' first
class scouts of Troop 1,-John and Archer
Hoyt,: at an examination held by the
local Boy Scout council. Saturday
Troop 2 of the local Boy Scouts hiked to
King's i cabin, eight miles up Ashland
canyon- .
Mrs. H. H. Palmer, a pioneer resident
of this section, fell on a stairway and
suffered a fractured arm.
Three Counts Are
Returned Against
"Mrs. Lark Evans"
Medford. Or.. May 19. The grand Jury
returned three indictments against the
young woman known as Mrs. ' Lark
Evans under her maiden name of Mil
dred Coe, in connection with the sensa
tional jitney robbery case of W. O. White
of Grants Pass, of which Evans was
found guilty some time ago and . sen
tenced to 15 years in t the penitentiary,
and whose case has been appealed to the
supreme court. ' " i '
One Indictment charges larceny of
White's! auto, another stealing and the
last with unlawful relations with Lark
Evans. ! She is held under $500 bond
which she furnished. :
