F." Lancner The reorganization of the Oregon Dairymen's league under the Sapiro plan Jb virtually complete bo far as the contract calling for 75 per cent of the present membership In the league Is concerned. Some Interesting facts have "been brought out In the work of reorganiza tion . Undr the old Dairymen's league plan numerous farmers had refused to become members becayse 'they felt that the plan of organization, while it might b efficient, was Insufficient to carry out the purpose for which the league was originally formed. With the new plan of reorganization, hundreds of new members have been added to the Oregon Dairymen's Cooperative league, as the organization will In the near-future be called, and the scope of its Influence will be extended Into a state-wide co operative association. New member ships are being added from every dairy ing section in Western Oregon while nu merous memberships are being- added from that portion of Southwestern Washington to which Portland is the natural ( market center. 3" Bt'SIJIEHS IS GROWING During the past six months the Dairy men's league has developed into a busi ness of vast importance. It has mar keted in this period 29.617,360 pounds of milk, practically all of it in the form of the raw product." But these figures, enormous as -they are, will pale into In significance as the new league gets into operation and handles milk on a state wide basis. The dairymen of Coos' and Curry counties,! largely Interested In the manufacture of cheese, are joining the new league in large numbers and in al most every other dairying center of the state' the league is arranging for locals and. distributing points and discussing with local members the possibilities of cheese factories, creameries and the mul tiplicity of miscellaneous sidelines of dairying which can be profitably ex tended under the state-wide cooperative plan. . The extension of the Sapiro plan to the dairymen 6t Oregon is an Interest ing' phase of the development of the co operative idea in the Pacific Northwest. First adopted j by the Oregon fruit growers, it was next taken up by the Oregon poultrymen, then by the Oregon, Washington and Idaho honey men, the Washington and Idaho wheat growers, by the Oregon Dairymen's league and at the latest report by the Inland Empire Milk Producers' association, 'serving the city andenvirons of Spokane with raw. and manufactured milk. Cooperative marketing under this plan permits the grower to get all the profit that is his just due. Under the financial " plan It enables htm to present an Im pregnable front to the speculative buyers of dairy products. It enables the dairy man, for example; to own his own butter making plants and to put his butter in cold storage against famine periods, feeding it out to the wholesaler and tak ing the profit which at present goes to the speculator j in cold storage butter. . The chief charm of the plan is in the fact that the dairyman gets his money for his milk as soon as it is delivered, . regardless of whether there is a surplus or not, and then in addition he gets the benefit of the increase in price when the butter market .irises, as it usually does In the autmn and winter months. ' OKT FINANCIAL SUPPORT In general, the plan of financing is similar to that; of the Oregon Growers' association, through a subsidiary cor poration owned by the Dairymen's as sociation. Financing of this factory holding company will be' comparatively euny, although j the growers remain in constant control. Skeptics of the Ore gon Fruit Growers' association stated that banks would not finance the asso ciation ; interested concerns who donot wish farmers' organizations to be prop : erly oenducted on business lines- or financed by progressive banking inter ests do vnot hesitate to issue statements whichj-are remote from the truth on the activities of farmers' cooperative mar keting associations. Yet the fact re mains' that under the same financing plan as the Dairymen's league the Ore gon Growers' association has been able to secure most; complete financial sup port from the! banks and bankers of Western Oregon and Portland and the Dairymen's league, in its reorganized form, will be Able to do the same.
