RECORD VALUE TO
RULE OR SALMON
- By Hynaa H. Cohen i i,T;
Aa the aeaapn progresses Jodicatlons
point more strongly to etill greater ad
vances tn the opening price of Columbia
river canned salmon than had been ex
pected or forecast. With fish, labor and
materials of most kinds higher in price,
packers are a unit In believing that the
canned fish price must rule above a, year
ago.-. . . ' - i . -,
While on pound tall of the' Columbia river
Chinook opened both s year ago and two years
ago at. $3.15 doses, it is generally bettered
today Chat the 1820 price win start at not lees
than. $8.40 and .a 83.50 market would be by
so mean surprising. - - t-
Packers are this season paying' hich as
IS He a pound for raw aalmon to fiaheftnen,
although the agreed price between packers was
only 12c at.compsred with 11 H a year ago i
The extra premium is armilable at this tun
because there 1 an unusually small run of fish
in the river and the demand 1 far in excess
of offerings. .
Packers are paying cannery labor .more money
than s year ago. and there baa already been
s 50 per cent increase in the box price, while
some belieee this is merely s starter.
The proposed new price mean the highest
value on record.- - -i f .
