in his fight to stamp out the evil.
While it ls,Jcnown that there is a little
betting on the games at the park, it is
rot carried , on openly and' in a very
small proportion to that in San Fran
cisco. - I
.The .Judge does not anticipate any
trouble in handling the situation here.
WILI, MEIOAK HELP! - . ,
The, addition of Paul Meloan, former
San Francisco and Vernon outfielder,
to the Seattle club, is . not going to add
a great deal of strength to the Ralniers.
Meloan hit .285 for the Seals in 1915
and his mark last year was just .300 in
a league of lower classification than the
Coast circuit. Honlg, the Baltimore
gardener, .will help the Ralniers greatly
as he is said to be a valuable player.
.ANOTHER FIELDER NEEDED
Manager Walter McCredie needs an
other outfielder for his aggregation as
well as another pitcher. The Beavers
-are the only club in the circuit carrying
but three regular outfielders, while all
the other clubs have four.
Had McCredie had a man to replace
Maisel when the Beaver captain broke
his finger in-the - series against San
Francisco, the morale of the team would
not have "aeroplaned" as it did.
McCredie i may odd another pitcher
before his blub returns home. Detroit
owes Portland another player and it is
likely that Kavin will be able to send a
hurler west withn the next fortnight. "!
The Detroit owner, in complimenting
Manager Graham of San Francisco on
his stand in the Seaton-Smith case, has
promised to assist San Francisco in lin
ing up a couple of pitchers. This in no
way will affect Portland's agreement
with the Tigers. --
