American steamship Callao and the
British steamer Vauban from Rio to

The immediate effect on the business
of the Callao was the cancellation of
passage by voyagers who had been mis
led Into a feat that the boat was risky.

the shipping board, said tod.-y that in
vestigation hai convinced him that at
tacks are being made on the new Ameri
can servk-e by interests which would

force the shipping bourd to sell out and
permit the ships : to drift into foreign
registry. To hlsj end, he has learned,
they are trying to make the service un
popular ; with travelers, evpecting to
make it a financial failure and thereby
to cause its abandonment.
The ag-erits of the Callao 'deny the re
ports regarding the ship. She is said to
be in the, best of condition and her
schedule has been carried out : on the
voyage. There were no attempts to
damage her machinery, as reported, al
though competing lines did "try to hire
away some, of her crew so as to delay
