RIO TO NEW YORK
Rio Janeiro. May It. -Tha reputa
tion ' of the American shipping
board's passenger service is at stake
in a race begrun today between the
American steamship Callao and the
British steamer Vauban from Rio to
New York. '..-..,-
- American business men have accepted
this sailing: as a test of their country's
new passenger service and are backing
the Callao heavily to tie up m the East
river, New Tork. ah?ad of the Vauban.
, ?The race was welcomed by the Ameri-
cans as a chance to disprove Injurious
reports regarding the shipping board

United States are thoroughly aroused by
hat they suspect to be a conspiracy to
f'iwredit the f new American shipping
board passenger service to South Amer
ica by a system of lying propaganda.

age on board the! steamer Callao which
was false In the first place, but which,
nevertheless, was Repeated jn print three
times after Wong intervals for its effect
of makinjr the Vessel appear to be unsafe.
This report k-as published first when
the ship spiled from New Tork. Not
withstanding there were no new develop
ments, the story ) was again published
when the Callao left Rio de Janeiro for
Buenos Aires and a third time, still with
not new facts, hen she departed from
Buenos Aires fm her return trip.
The immediate effect on the business
of the Callao was the cancellation of
passage by voyagers who had been mis
led Into a feat that the boat was risky.

B. F Kc-kenbrack, representative of
the shipping board, said tod.-y that in
vestigation hai convinced him that at
tacks are being made on the new Ameri
can servk-e by interests which would
benefit through Its faijure.,,. These Inter
ests, Eckenbrack declares., are trying- to
force the shipping bourd to sell out and
permit the ships : to drift into foreign
registry. To hlsj end, he has learned,
they are trying to make the service un
popular ; with travelers, evpecting to
make it a financial failure and thereby
to cause its abandonment.
The ag-erits of the Callao 'deny the re
ports regarding the ship. She is said to
be in the, best of condition and her
schedule has been carried out : on the
voyage. There were no attempts to
damage her machinery, as reported, al
though competing lines did "try to hire
away some, of her crew so as to delay
sailing. ; - .,

Is savory, but rather tough. 4s the Paris
Ian verdict today on a xoo animal which
was butchered he-e and sold through the
markets to the purchasers. ; !
The camel was split Into steaks, chops,
filets, , etc.. and made COO pounds of
meat, which retailed at an average of
six francs (nominally $1.15) a pound.
The xoo received 2000 francs for the ani
mal. - -

Hotels, -restaurants and stores and
shops of every description have been
bought up by Parisian profiteers from
simple provincials, and the price lists are
being raised higher and higher, until
now a j night's lodging, formerly $1,
ooets $8.! while simple meals . fetch any
where from $10 to S0. -
Automobile hire is one of the main
sources of revenue for theroug-ers. They
charge from $100 upward for a trip from
Verdun; Chalons . or ' Barleduo to Ro-rasgng-

Similar conditions exist In and around
Mesieres,' Chateau - Thierry, Rheims,
Sotssons and other places where Ameri
can troops distinguished themselves on
the field of battle.
