ADMIRAL LINER SAILS FOR ORIENT: WITH FULL CARGO Clearing j at the 1 customs house Tuesday morning for Oriental porta, the steamship Abercos sailed at 1 o'clock. She was dispatched by the Admiral line and carries a general cargo for Yokohama! Kobe, Shang hai, Manila and Hongkong. The cargo totals' 8300 tons and is the tenth to be; dispatched over the same route by the Admiral line operators. Included in the carfto of the Abercos ls print paper, cotton, flour, caustic soda, steel, ( electrical machinery, lum ber And jvlr. Flour and machinery will be dichars?ed at Japanese ports and lumber and tfce balance of the general cargo will o to destinations in China. STEELMAKER GETS AWAY J ?' - Proceeding the Abercos the' Steelmaker Eot away Monday with 2500 tons of flour and 1,500.000 feet of lumber for Oriental ports. Departure of, these two steamships marks the beginning Of one of tho heaviest weeks in off Shore trade for the Port of Portland. ' Six American steamships, two Japanese, two American and one British schooners are working cargo. The j Chinese steamship Hwha Wu, with vegetable oil, passed Tatooeh at 5 o'clock this morning and will be ready to work carjro at the Municipal dock No. 4 Wednesday morning. The oil in the Hwah Wu is in cases and arrangements have been completed to transfer to tank cars and"v tanks at the city plant in St. Johns. Due to sail the latter part of the week are the West Keats and the West Ni varia, operated by the Columbia-Pacific Steamship company. The former has a full cargo of, lumber and the latter is taking creosoted ties at St- Helens. WEST JESTER ARRIVES The steamship West Jester of the same line arrived . up today and will begin taking lumber at the Clarke-Wilson mills at Linnton Wednesday morn ing. She will be ready for. sea the early part of next. week. At the Inman-Poulsen mills the Ameri can schooner William H. Smith is load ing for Australia. At the Eastern & Western mills the American schooner Thistle and the British schooner Cecelia Sudden are working lumber foi ports in the South Pacific. -rf - . Estimating on; the amount of cargo handled and the capacity of the fleet now In port, it is thought that be tween 35 and 40 sailing craft, whlch made Portland harbor picturesque some years ago, would be required to handle the cargo that will be set afloat from Portland during the present week. I.OCAI FIRM BUST Dant & Russell are looking after the lumber shipmentson the west coast of South America. The steamships Des lile and Silverado are both under char ter to that firm and are due to begin loading the latter part of the present week. The Deslile is a Williams Dia mond boat, and the Silverado is con trolled by the General Steamship cor poration of San Francisco, . The steamship Steel Voyager of the Isthmian line is due Friday. She will take-a full load of general cargo for Atlantic ports and will assist material ly in advancing the total of shipment for the month of May.' ' . i . Coastwise shipments are receiving a good share of attention in the general summing-up of the week's business. The Admiral line steamship City of Topeka sailed Monday night, for Coos Bay, Kureka and San Francisco - With passengers and freight. The luVnber schooners Johan Poulsen, Daisy, Ave lon and Wapama will be .away by the end of this week. , WAURENTON TO CELEBRATE 'OPENING OF SKlPANON RIVER Thursday j will mark the opening of Warrenton as a port for deep water ves--sels. The sapre has been set for a big celebration at the little town on the Skipanon when the steam schooner -Solano arrives tlrere Thursday morning. The vessel sailed from San Francisco Monday night. Officials of the' Port of v Astoria;- the . Chamber of Commerce and boosters from Seaside will have been in vited to attend the festivities at War renton. j ' ' A dream of 10 years has been realized at Warrenton. Nine years were con sumed in devising ways' and means. One year sufficed to do the work. With a total expenditure of $260,000 the Sklp anon can now receive an ocean going vessel. Thei sawmills, which have for years been dependent on the rail line for lumber shipments, have, now the relief afforded by water transportation. It is estimated that the cost of the Improvements is In excess of the assessed J valuation of the entire tow town or war- 1 renton at the time of the conception of the idea of a harbor. On the outlay in the Skipanon the city disbursed $135,000. From reclamation service $65,000 was secured and the Port of Astoria con tributed dredging to the amount of $60,000. A ffature of the celebration will be steamboat rides on the river between Warrenton and the Columbia for. the purpose of giving visitors an opportunity of close inspection of the - work. STEAMSniP DIANA IS SOLD TO BROOKS' CORPORATION Advices to Lieutenant Harold C Jones of the sea service bureau announce the sale of the steamship Diana to the Brooks steamship corporation of New York. The vessel Is now at Baltimore and will proceed from that port to New York for delivery. f The Diana is a Ballin type' wooden fct earner and , was constructed by i the Supple & Balltn plant at Tortrland. She sailed from this port January 3, with a cargo of 'ties for England in the service of the Columbia-T'acific Steamship com pany, f . Sixteen of the Ballin ype craft have "now been acquired by the.
