Market Basket
By Hjnig H. Coses .
The consumer nujr u well make op
his or her mind that there U not going
to be any Immediate "Bmash" In food
rtuff prices and that the chances are
that values will be higher' before they
are lower.
. For instance, much depends upon the
foreign situation. The average con
sumer believes that this concerns none
but the financier or banker, but that's
a mistake. The price of foreign ex
change and the condition of the foreign
markets affects the American foodstuff
lituatlon very materially.
EXCHANGE AFFECTS MILK
For instance, there' has been intense
weakness In the market for canned milk.
Warehouses all over the country were
loaded to the doors with supplies. Con-
densary plants were being shut down in
many sections of the country because
of the lack of demand. It looked as if
the bottom had Indeed fallen out of the
market.
It was nothing more nor less than a
reflection of what was occurring in the
foreign markets, and in foreign money
and exchange rates. When foreign
money or exchange c was quoted so low
that a dollar or Its so-called equivalent
abroad would not ' purchase more than
0 per cent worth of goods, it meant
that the consumer had to pay 40 per
cent more for actual necessities than
would be the case if money was worth
Its face value. This cut down the de

eign countries practically stopped.
Then, all of a sudden, foreign money
' and exchange began to climb and ad
vance were so liberal that there was a
general resumption of the foreign! de
mand. This In turn has again affected
the American markets. With the I im
proved foreign demand milk condensing
companies instantly stiffened up (heir
prices and yesterday forced them slight-

CHEAPER TEAL IS HERE
Cheaper veal Is here because this is
the time of the year that the country
makes Its greatest shipments to the city
markets. There have been declines of
lc to 3c a pound in the wholesale price
recently, and the consumer will get this
fit purchase Is made only at those places
that are playing lair la tne price game.
Chickens continue very scarce and are
still commanding record prices.
Potatoes are today advanced to such
figures that boiled stock is all the rage.
Less peeling before cooking will save
much stock and money.
Yhe ' folio wise prices arc rrerift ones that
commmer ar expected to pay retail stores.
Quality noted is the aTarasa, fancy staff being
