. While everyone here knows that sugar
Is very high prices along the Pacific
ooaet and that the consumer here is to
day paying record -values for sweetening, !
this section is quite well on wnen tne
condition of the East is considered.
The prices -paid for sugar here are
guaged absolutely by what the refiners
charge, there being practically no specu
lation shown in this entire territory.
In the East, It Is charged, the refiners
arc not keeping down the expense of
handling as well as on the Pacific coast
J There, it i sstated. a very Urge per cent
of the sugar Is going from the renners
to apeculatlve interests.
This Is called Toll" sugar by the
trade, this being the first time that such
a term has been utilized and generally
speaking It has completely submerged
the former method of quoting refinery
basis. The word "toll" is rightly used
because the consumer and dealer alike
are forced to pay a fee to those who
are purely speculators and have no place
at all in the distributing system.
The following prioe are) average onea that
consumers are expected to pay retail stores. Qual
ity noted is the average, fancy stuff being slightly

SpeculaMve interest is keen In the
market for grain bags at this time. Much
of the keenness Is believed to be due
to the uncertain situation which has
cauned the general trade to- fear to
operate on any extensive scale.
Biwculatlve grain beg interest are trying to
oreete artificial strength In the situation along
the Pacific coast today, but are meeting with
little or no success from the growers' end of
the game.
Market for Tour continues to strengthen and
the demand for wheat is more active.

BULGE IX CORV GIVES
WAV TO LOSS LATER
Chicago. April 6. (I. N. 8.) Scattered
liquidation apd persistent selling by strong com
mission houses sent the entire grain list close
to the botUan in today s session of the Board
of Trade.
Losses from the hich spots of the dsy were
4 H for May corn. 4 14 for the July and 8 14
for September. At the finish May oats were
2 H 2 H c under their high mark ; July 2 m
2 H c under, and September 1 H 1 He below.
Pork finished at the bottom, but 5c higher
than yesterday: lard was close to the low and
averaged about the same as yesterday's close,
ind May ribs closed 7 He under Monday, with
July 5c lower.
The late wave of liquidation caught many
stop loss orders arid the approaching federsl
grand jury investigstion of a comer in corn
induced many scattered holders to let go.
Chicago, April 6. (I. N. 8.) Anticipa
tion of a big bulge caused May corn to open H
(tf 1 H c higher, but offerings soon swamped the
buyer and there was a sharp break just after
the start. July opened steady to He lower,
dropping when May broke. September started
H c lower.
There waa a wild scramble for May oat at
the opening, with prices steady to He higher.
September started 14 lc lower. The general
market eased after the opening.
Provisions got a strong tart with limited of
ferings. Buying was scattered.

MARKET IS BRACED
BY GOLD IMPORTS;
Bp Broadan Wall
New York, April 8. Tha excel
lent statement of tha federal re
serve bank on Saturday combined
with reports ef further gold Imports
which resulted ia sterling, touching
a new high record for the year gave
the stock market a firm undertone
Monday in spite of the blizzard that
cut off much of the western busi
ness. Sterling went to $4.08 In the early
afternoon. Money renewed at 7 per
cent and waa offered In large volume
aa low as 6, but brokers did not want
It because the long account In stocks in
too small. The technical condition of
the stock market, is excellent. The only
reason there was any hesitation at all
was that traders expected the bllszard
would cut off much of the bullish en
thusiasm that has been coming from
the West and because they feared fur
ther complications In Europe following
the action of France in regard to the
Ruhr valley.
Stocks opened strong, but almost im
mediately sold off 2 and & points all
along the line. Crucible waa about the
only Issue to hold Its own and It re
mained firm around 260. Other specu
lative favorites were strong. Even steel
yielded to the selling of the street. After
the money market opened Crucible be
gan moving upward and continued the
leader of the day In point of strength,
although some others exceeded it in ac
tivity. Before the close Crucible had
sold aa high as 271 H. Corn Products
distinguished itself almost from the be
ginning of the market.
Foreign Market
Is Not Encouraging
To American Buyer
That the financial market at the pres
ent time has less power of absorption for
securities of essential public purpoeea
than any time during the past year Is the
popular opinion among the established
investment houses of the country which
handle high grade securities. They are
pessimistic about the ability, of the rail
roads to raise the amount of capital re
quired for new equipment, enlarged ter
minals and other facilities required to
enable them to render proper service to
the public.
Regarding foreign securities. Invest
ment bankers are of one opinion the
United States ought to buy them.
It Is authoritatively stated, however,
that the prospects for selling the secur
ities at the present time are rather dis
couraging. With Liberty bonds selling
on a better than, 5 per cent basis, and
any number of bonds and preferred
stocks to yield 6 and 7 per cent and up
ward, the American people are Very well
content with their own securities.

Through the i immense amount of
financing done in Wall street during the
war and alnce the armistice it was pre
dicted by many that New York would
soon become the financial center of the
world. Relative to that Question, W. P.
Hamilton, editor of the Wall Street
Journal, In a recant address, remarked
the following :
"There has been talk of New York be
coming the financial center of the world,
hut you will notice that New York bank
ers of any standing make no such
claims, just as thoughtful Americans,
with a true sense of our own weak
nes, despise all this nauseating 'sanc
timonious parade of ourselves as the
leaders of the world In morals, culture
arid good government. London is the
financial center of the world today, rap
idly becoming again the free market for
everything. Only the other day one of
the greatest of the New York bankers
said that New Tork might in time be
