The Jap- tfneae representatives of the company were particularly impressed by the fact that there are no Japanese lines oper ating into the local harbor. By early summer the Japanese steam ship companies will be forming regular trade routes to the Pacific, says Instad, and by early summer the officials of the Mitsubishi company will be able to announce definitely whether they will establish a permanent Portland service. LOADS LVMBEB CARGO The Tomlura Maru, first of the ves Mis of the Mitsubishi company to visit t this port, has finished loading a cargo of lumber at the Inman-Poulsen mill , for the Far East and was scheduled to leave the lumber dock at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Her cargo consists of 3,000,- 000 feet of Oregon lumber. ; CHAMBER IS QUERIED ABOUT ALLOCATION OF IT. S. BOATS Asking the Portland Chamber of Com merce for an expression of opinion of the proposed allocation of American vessels to German trade, the New York i Commercial has sent a message to the local body. The message follows: "There is a proposal before the shlp , ping board for the allocation of Ameri can vessels to former Germain trade routes from German ports. Does your organisation favor or disapprove the use of American ships to carry German goods direct to the markets : of the world? What stand should American exporters take if the shipping; board bould make such arrangements?" The message will be referred to the shipping committee of the chamber for their derision. They are Choichl Konishl, aged 22, and Takebachl Okamoto, 28. Both are seamen, and have not been to this coun try before, it Is said. A local Japanese. upposed to be a second tidusin of Choichl, admitted to im migration men that tie sent his wife to Chotchi with some American clothes when the ship first docked, but he insists the clothes were for working purposes only. Choichi is unusually lare-e for a Jap, weighing 160 pounds and standing o leet incnea tali. The steamer was guarded both night and day with men with rifles, but it is believed the two who escaped left about 5 p. m. Thursday, as they were missed shortly thereafter. It waa announced by navy officials herd today. , ERINSEI DEGREE CHARGED An indictment charging murder in the second degree was returned to day by the Multnomah county grand Jury.agraist Ralph Bruno, formerly proprietor of a pool hall at First and Clay streets, for the killing of Rich ard Troy, ex-convict, at Third and Harrison streets on the evening of March 6. Trpy, who was otherwise known as "Wisconsin Dick," according to police records, waa accused by Bruno of break ing up his home. Bruno said that Troy was the cause of his wife securing a di vorce last. December. Accosting Troy In the street, an argumeht followed and Troy was shot down, according to Bruno's statements, when he defied his slayer. Bruno is in the county jail. II CASES COSIDETlEI The grand Jury during March consid ered 33 cases, returning 18 true bills and 13 not true bills. Of the indictments re turned today, nine were-secret and six open. Urgent recommendation was again made by the grand Jury that automobile dealers use more caution in selling ma chines to irresponsible persons. One or two payments are made on these cars, the Jury statement reads, then purchaser and car leave "for unknown parts." "The grand Jury is asked to indict, putting the state to great expense," the statement concludes. "The dealers are secured by Insurance and are not finan cially Interested." FACES POLYGAMY CHARGE A polygamy charge is faced by John E. McCleery as a result of the indict ment against him. McCleery. married to Ida E. Boag in 1917 and the father of her two children, is accused of hav ing been married last May to Bernice Tolly, 20-year-old daughter of Frank Tolly, 419 Webster street McCleery was arrested at one time on a non-support charge preferred by his legal wife and investigations at that time resulted in the discovery that he was the head of two domestic establish ments, it is said. Other indictments returned were against Alfons Verhaeghe, charged with carrying concealed weapons : Ross Cum mings, alias George Crawford, accused Of forgery ; William McKay, forgery, and Frank J. Or., in 191L JUDGE THROWS THE MICHAEL DIVORCE SUIT OUT OF COURT Although one of the witnesses in the case evinced such profound religious convictions as to relapse into a "tongues of fire" conversation during his testimony. Circuit Judge Gatens threw out of court the divorce suit of Mrs. Hattie E. Michael against B. P. Michael Wednesday because of what he termed the "gross iramorality" of both parties to the suit A. E. Davidson, testifying in behalf of the plaintiff, suddenly relapsed into the; strenge religious demonstration, talking rapidly in an unknown tongue. The ' court waited until he had fin ished, then refused to hear any more witnesses. Mrs. Michael, who is a member of the Apostolic Faith mission, charged her husband with r cruelty, while the defendant accused her of in fidelity and that she had been alien ated Vom him by the disciples of the faith. The woman's own testimony. Judge Gatena charged indicated that she was either so weak mentally or so immoral that her testimony was un- irorthy of consideration. The husband was worse, the court said.
