By Hymam H. Cobaa
Consumers are In many Instances able
to purchase egg today at a price that
on tb eerface appears less than actual
wholesale figures. The best eggs are
selling at wholesale at 42c a dosen and
till many retailers are selling; at 40s a
doten.
There Is a very rood reason for this
alleged topsy-turvey appearance of the
trade. Retailers are not actually selling
eggs below the wholesale price and are
making- a legitimate profit even though
the flg-ures looks as If they are paying;
42c for errs and selling; them at 40a
Fact of the matter la that this time of
the season always allows a like condi
tion. Storage Interests are responsible
for this. They take a case of eggs and
by candling tests, divide the supplies into
three lota The best of these ar used
for storage and the others are sold for
the fresh egg trade.
Then latter esras are What are com'
monly called "weak" stock by the trade.
They are perhaps as fresh as the No. 1
stock, but for some reason or other will
not hold up In storage.. For that reason
cold storage interests put nothing away

MPROVED CALL
N WOOL TRADE
ImproTed conditions are generally in
dicated in the market for wool The
traffic congestion along the Atlantic
coast, which gave the trade such an ex
tremely bearish tone for some weeks,
appears to te eliminating itself. Bids
for wool are fully steady, although some
efforts are being made to hold down
Paclflo Northwest fleece because of the
opening of the eeason.
With Boston interests offering and paytng
78s to 77o for Arisona fleece,- It cannot- be
uid that the price ef wool Is by any means
depressed. Naturally, at this time of tb season,
when tb Pacific Northwent I sheering and
new fleece will aeon be offered in abundance,
tfcr is a disposition among tb big interests
to held buying operations in check lust to
lafluenr values hem
Among the Western woelgroww there ap
pear to be a disposition this season to eon
sign their fleece to commission firm, such a

WEATHER IS NOV
AFFECTING FEED
Weather conditions are having their
effect upon the hay and mill feed trade
here. There la a somewhat steadier
here. There la a somewhat steadier
generally, although as yet tt)ts has not
teen reflected in either oats or oariey
because of the lower price of corn.
Hay offerings are below expectations of th
trad and some slight sdvanee have been bid
in price during th last fw days, according to
Harry Sporiock. head of th bay department
of Everding Ac FarrelL
"Only a very scant stock of alfalfa kt now
being offered and the trade is bidding up to
832 a ton for supplies. Clover is extremely
scarce and demand favorable at 629 s ton,
while 880 is bsine nfffrpmi for eat and vetch
hay. A small amount of Willamette valley tim
othy is offering at $28 a ton."
Because of the somewhat better ton gen
erally apparent in 'the wbeat and flour markets,
bids for millstuffs for next month's deHvary

the amount of 1324,332.13. and during the same period for 1920 it was f 17,236,
