employes of the Westinghouse Electric
A Manufacturing company will be af
fected by a blanket insurance policy
, recently purchased by the company.
Policies vary In amount from $300 to
' 11000, according to the term of service,
and are carried without cost to the
workers. In addition, employes are al
lowed to Increase the value of their
policies to amounts varying from $1000
to $2000 by depositing a small percent
age of their salary or wages with the
company as a savings account. The
local agency of the Westinghouse com
pany was established In 1905. There
are at present seven employes on its
payroll, and, according to Manager Carl
I Wernicke, the majority of them
have been several years In the service
of the company.
Fame Is Growing The fame of Au
rora aeparag-us is spreading; to Cali
fornia. A. W. Schubert, proprietor of
the Grand Central hotel at Fresno and
a former resident of Portland, recently
had an argument with a restaurant keep
er over asparagus, Schubert claiming
that nowhere in the world was aspara
gus so excellent as to quality and large
ness as that grown at Aurora, Or. To
prove his contention. Schubert wrote
to George Quayle, secretary of the Ore
gon State L'hamber of Commerce, ask
ing for a box of the beet Aurora as
paragus available, by which he hopes to
induce the Californian to order hlB prod
uce from Oregon.
Edseator to Addreaa Club Colonel
David P. Barrows, president of Berkeley
university, will speak before a joint
meeting of the Oregon Civic league and
the Progressive Business Men's club next
Thursday at the Benson hotel. Colonel
Barrows was at one time discussed as a
United States. The Oregon Civic league
is to be host to Mrs. Florence Kelly,
national secretary of the Consumers'
league, at the Benson on Monday.
To Advertise Heppner Heppner is to
be advertised throughout the Middle
West as one of the sheep centers of Ore
gon. The First National bank of Hepp
ner recently prepared a list of sheep
owners in that vicinity with sheep for
sale, sending a copy to George Quayle,
- secretary of the Oregon State Chamber
of Commerce. Quayle has requested 100
copies to be supplied to persons ir the
Middle West making inquiries as to suit
able places for growing sheep..

of the Creston school district, whether
they have children or not, will have a
business and social meeting at the school
assembly hall Thursday night at t
o'clock in the Interest of the betterment
of community affairs. Music, games
and refreshments will feature the pro
gram. Human Society to )Im1 The annual
meeting of the Oregon Humane society
will be held at the Unitarian chapel,
Broadway and Yamhill streets, Tuesday
evening at 8 o'clock. The work of the
. society for the year will be reviewed
and an address on war dogs and other
animals in the S. O. S. zone will be
given by Dr. James Elvin of Salem.

Portland Art Association The eighth

Fellowship for Reed Graduates Fel
lowships at Tale university are await
ing Reed college graduates in mathe
matics, according to word received re
cently by Dr. Frank Loxley Grlfin of
the Reed mathematical department. The
fellowships require half-time teaching,
and pay $750 a year in addition, to tui
tion and advance study. The offer 'was
made by Professor W. A. Wilson of Tate
in recognition of Professor Griffin's sue
cess in preparing students for teaching
careers. Dr. Griffin became head of the
Reed mathematics department in 1911.

Larceny Trial Set Trial of Loren L.
Kingsland. who is charged with larceny
of about $200 from the U. S. Laundry,
will be held in Monday's session of the
municipal court Judge Rossman set
the trial date Saturday. Klng-aland was
a driver for the company. He is al
leged to have collected several bills and
failed to turn the money over.

Klnney was allowed his freedom Satur
day by Municipal Judge Rossman on
condition that he leave his 16-year-old
wife alone and allow her to go back to
her parents home. McKinney was ar
rested on a charge of threatening to
kill her.

sona magnetism with a natural talent
for losing herself in the character she
is portraying, and so successfully did
she do this that she was followed with
closest interest by the entire audience.

the Valair Conservatoire de Musique et
Art Draraatique, where she studied with
Miss Elizabeth Eugenia Woodbury, left
this morning, where she will coach dur
ing the summer, preparatory to going on

State Chamber Is
Clearing House in
Upbuilding Oregon
The Oregon State Chamber of Com
merce is the clearing house for Oregon
opportunities, concerning which it is re
ceiving letters both from persons desir
ing to settle in the state and from cities
in need of certain lines of business.
Andrew Alden of Minnesota has
visited the state chamber, in an effort
to get in touch with opportunities on
large ranches for dairying and stock
raising. While here he Is also seeking
industrial and farming opportunities for
many friends who desire to locate in
Oregon.
The First National bank of Scappoose
has Informed the state chamber that
there la at Scappoose an excellent loca
tion for a small sawmill. Two million
or more feet of second growth timber
is available on level land. Initial pay
ment would be required on timber, bal
ance to be paid for as cut Scappoose
is within 20 miles of Portland, one mile
from the railroad station and on a
paved highway.
The State chamber has Information
concerning opportunity for a physician
and a druggist in Southern Oregon.
As a result of correspondence with the
chamber, George Meinhardt and family
of Delta, Utah, are now comfortably lo
cated on a fine 50-acre far mnear Eu-
gene. -A friend of his la now looking for
a farm In that vicinity, and his family
will soon follow.
